Well, it’s the Friday after Thanksgiving and for my wife and I that means a serious day of traveling. Three and a half hours to Dallas, then a flight to Austin and then a connecting flight home to Phoenix. Hopefully traffic will be good and we’ll get home around 11pm.
It’s going to be a long day.
But to make it better, we checked in as soon as we could, nabbing the ever-wonderful “A” boarding group on Southwest. That means we get the seats of our choice and leads me to the Friday question:
“Where do you sit on a plane? Aisle, middle or window? And why?”
I HAVE to have a window seat if I’m to survive a long flight. Even a short one. It makes me feel less closed in and also helps me to grab a quick nap.
I once flew from Hawaii to Phoenix on a red eye flight that left at 11pm and got in at 7am. Around 6 hours of total flight time.
I had a nice seat, but they moved me to accommodate a couple that wanted to sit together. Lame. The new seat was just in front of a bulkhead, on the aisle and a huge 300+ pound guy sat in front of me and leaned back the entire flight.
The great part of sitting on a bulkhead is that your seat CAN’T lean back. So here I had this other seat in my face, I couldn’t sleep cause I wasn’t at a window and I couldn’t really move much either. One of the worst flights of my life.
So what is it? Window, aisle or middle?
(I don’t know ANYONE who likes the middle)
The Friday Question – 11/23/07…

I’m usually OK with either window or aisle, but tend to lean towards the aisle, so I can get up and stretch. Plus I can be up first upon landing. Just please airline gods, don’t stick me the middle for a 5 hr flight.
I’m 6’3″ so I like the emergency exit row. I’ll take a window or aisle. I make everyone miserable when I sit in the middle.
I prefer the window seat because I can kinda curl up against the wall and nap. While my wife rarely sleeps at all on flights, I can usually doze off before we’ve even left the runway! Something about the white noise, the cool air vent blasting in my face, and the settling nerves – ‘cuz once you’re on the plane, there’s no point in worrying any longer about whatyou might’ve forgotten – I’m out like a light!
We’re prepping for a very long flight next week – to Moscow, Russia! Incredibly exciting, but also very nerve-wracking…
Rob, that’s pretty amazing. My wife and I have had trouble getting pregnant ourselves and are looking into adoption…
I know a guy who adopted two children from Russia and it seems like such a tough process, so much time to wait and faith that when you get there, you’ll have that child waiting.
I wish you the best of luck!
Always the aisle…. you get more leg room… well, on one side anyways..
