Up until today, I had no clue there was even a notion of a fourth Terminator film, and now not only is that moving ahead big time, there are sources on The Movie Blog saying that Christian Bale will play John Connor in it.
The movie has a working title, “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins“, which seems like a mouthful and will likely be changed. I hope so at least. We’ll call it Terminator 4 for now.
There doesn’t appear to be an official synopsis yet, but I found this on IMDB, posted by Anonymous:
After the drastic effects of Terminator 3, the story continues as John Connor and soon to be wife Kate Brewster realize they must create a resistance organization with Earth’s remaining survivors against the army of robots slowly being built up by Skynet. As they are building this resistance, one survivor happens to be a traitor in disguise, and has a secret that nobody would ever come to suspect.
Supposedly this will be an entirely new cast of actors, no holdovers from Terminator 3, no Arnold. I don’t even remember what the “drastic effects” were in the last film, might be time to re-watch it.
Terminator Chronicles has some other news on the plot, from James Middleton, who is the producer of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. One interesting point from it:
“…the movie will feature a new hero as the main character. Middleton likened it to how “Ben-Hur was influenced by Jesus Christ, but it was his story. Much in that way, this character will be influenced by John Connor.”
Well, the big thing here is Bale. Getting him to sign on for the film is a huge acquisition. He is at the top of his game right now, massively popular and super talented. From The Machinist, to Batman Begins to Rescue Dawn, which just came out on DVD, Bale has been ripping up the reviews and making a big name for himself.
His being attached to Terminator 4 will give it a credibility it didn’t get in the last film.
The film is scheduled to be released in the Summer of 2009, so we are a long way off, but I’ll mark this down as the first movie I’m looking forward to that year.
What about you guys? Are you looking forward to a new Terminator?

Christian Bale to play John Connor in new Terminator film…
Up until today, I had no clue there was even a notion of a fourth Terminator film, and now not only is that moving ahead big time, there are sources on The Movie Blog saying that Christian Bale will play John Connor in it.
The movie has a working titl…
Christian Bale is an incredible actor, but his choices in material are sometimes pretty hit & miss.
“The Machinist” and “Harsh Times” were truly horrible, horrible wastes of his talent. But “Reign of Fire,” “Batman Returns,” and “The Prestige” were awesome!
I haven’t seen “Rescue Dawn” but some of the reviews aren’t exactly compelling…
So, I’m not alltogether certain that you can bank on a movie being good just because he’s signed on. Profitable? Likely. Good? Anybody’s geuss…
However, all that said, I’m sure chomping at the bit to see “Dark Knight!”
Welcome Rob! Appreciate the opinions…
I will disagree with you on The Machinist. That was a fantastic movie and took him losing a ton of weight to pull off. It got a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, FAR from horrible. Not seen Harsh Times yet though.
Not sure what you read about Rescue Dawn, but it got a 90% on Rotten, and I thought it was a great war movie. One of the best I’ve seen.
Now, I know I mention Rotten a lot, but as it takes in almost every internet review there is, I feel it’s a great gauge of what people think.
Dark Knight will be excellent!
I’ll certainly give you that Bale’s self-transformation in “The Machinist” was an incredible act of dedication. He became so gaunt and skeletal, it was kinda painful to even watch. But the movie just fell flat for me. The payoff was weak and the buildup was way too bizarro!
But y’know, there’s so much of the “magic” of movies that’s either made or broken in the editing room long after the shooting has completed that I don’t entirely fault Bale for the duds. It’s rare that his acting is anything less than stellar – although “Harsh Times” was pure crap any which way you wanna look at it.
That’s too bad you didn’t enjoy the movie. I thought the entire film was good and wasn’t just waiting for the payoff I guess. Although it has been awhile.
It probably isn’t a movie for everyone, it’s pretty depressing and slow moving at times.
You are starting to make me second guess myself in renting Harsh Times. i think it’s sitting at home from our Blockbuster queue.
CB in the terminator. I’m at least intrigued. T3 was OK, but hopefully with Arnold out of the way they can take the franchise in a new direction. Lot’s to explore in the post-apocalyptic new world run by Skynet.
If CB is in it then you know I’m watching. Although I’m hoping he’ll someday do another mushy girl movie for me. I watch Little Women, Newsies and Swing Kids regularly for that
CB in T4!?!?! LETS GO GET IN LINE NOW!! =)
i’m thinking, yes, this will be a rockin good flick
I’m with Rob on that – The Prestige and Batman Returns – he did a really good job in. I think he has progressed fairly well as an actor.
Have you seen Rescue Dawn yet?
A must-rent for Bale fans.
I have not seen that. Might have to drop it in the NetFlix queue.
