Okay, maybe not EXACTLY an antique, but news out of the world of Sony products today kind of makes me sad.
According to a rumor that EngadgetHD has pretty much confirmed now, Sony is discontinuing the production of all rear-projection televisions. They may not even make attempts to fill backorders.
Engadget even created this little graphic below to make the news sting a bit more:
I have a Sony GrandWega 42-inch rear projection LCD HDTV that I absolutely love and have loved for awhile now. It’s never had a problem, the bulb is still going strong and I see no reason to replace it.
But Sony isn’t making them anymore, and is the last of the big manufacturers to do so. It was funny the other day I thought that I am seeing less and less of these kinds of TVs around at Best Buy and other electronic stores, and now the news arrives.
Why does it hurt? Well, when you pay $1800 for a TV only to have its kind completely outdated in less than three years, it makes you wonder.
More than likely Blu-Ray will win the war coming up here soon, ruin my new HD-DVD player and then I’ll have an open house for all of you guys to check out the electronics museum I seem to be creating over here.

Don’t worry Mike – those HD DVD’s will make wonderful coasters and shiny round things to hang from your rear-view mirror.

I’ve got a 11 year old Sony rear projection TV that’s still going strong. I like the picture on it even though it isn’t HD. We’re considering getting a HD LCD after we move into a new house early next year.

Not to worry, your TV looks great and I’m sure will last for many more years. The fact that they don’t make them anymore just means you’ll have to buy a different one next time.

I, too, got a Panny RPLCD 50-inch and if they stop making lamps, then we are in trouble.
Don’t forget that the lamp make it like 100% each time. That’s if you don’t have any troubles with the TV(ballast or electronics).
I paid $5000(with taxes, extended warranty) in 2003. Of course, the Canadian dollar was way less back then. Of course, when you go at Costco, you find 42-inch LCD for $1100 and it’s 1080P.

I have a 56′ Mitsubishi projection HD TV that has no DVI or HDMI slots on it….so right now I cant even get a Blue-Ray to help them win the war quicker!
[...] now Best Buy, always at the forefront of these things it seems (like getting rid of all rear projection TVs), announced today that they will “showcase Blu-Ray as the HD [...]
You can always sell your rear projection television for parts and put that money towards a new LCD flat screen with all the bells and whistles.
