If the WGA strike can somehow end before all hope is lost, then Scrubs’ fans may get a long desired wish.
The janitor will get a name.
According to an article on ScrippsNews.com, the janitor was never suppsoed to have a name. In fact, he was never intended to be a real person. The idea was that he’d only be a figment of Dr. Dorian’s imagination.
From the article, quoting Bill Lawrence, Scrubs creator/producer:
“Originally The Janitor was going to end up being a figment of J.D.’s imagination (I never expected the show to last more than a few episodes so that would have been possible — and why he only interacted with J.D. at first),” Lawrence wrote in a recent e-mail. “We just always thought of him as more menacing as a nameless sketchy antagonist and decided not to reveal his name until the end.”
“There’s a case to be made for never learning the name of the character: TV history tells us a finely tuned character known by just a surname needs no other form of I.D.
He has a good point. The first one I thought of was Wilson from Home Improvement. Not only did it take forever to find out his name, you also never saw his face.
The article listed some I forgot about, like MacGyver, Columbo, Agent 99 from Get Smart to name a few. It also took a long time for us to find out that Kramer’s first name was Cosmo.
“Cosmo?????” I loved that episode.
Any guesses as to what his name could be? He looks like a Bill to me, or maybe a Steve.
I just hope we get to find out. Since this is the final season of Scrubs, the strike could kill any real finale the fans were hoping for. For those dedicated viewers of the hilarious comedy, it could be a sucky way to end it all.
I kind of reported back a few months ago that there was a rumor he’d get a name, but it’s definite now. If you want to read more about what we were supposed to get in the finale, check out this older blog post.
His name is Janitor.
Many of you people who are fans of Scrubs probably have seen every episode. In one episode called “My Buddies Booty” the janitor is talking to a bunch of his friends. When Dr. Cox comes around the corner and says” can I talk to you for a sec” The janitor responds. “Whats the matter Sally, vending machine out of bra’s again!” One of his Janitor buddies go “nice one Tom” BUT, if you listen very closely the janitors buddy goes “Nice, you tell’m” So for any of you who think you here is name. Your wrong. His name will be reviled in the last episode .
I don’t think anyone thinks we know his name, otherwise it wouldn’t be big news that we’ll be finding out
Thanks for stopping by Tommy…
I’d rather have it left at “janitor”. But if it’s true that Neil Flynn wants the character to have a name than I guess that’s alright.
his name is Lynch. in the episode, My Scrubs, season 6, Karla and Lavern are trying to get Rowdy back and their plan is that they will steal the other taxidermy dog and when the Janitor shows up with Rowdy under his arms, Turk and JD will know that “Lynch” has stolen Rowdy. Read it and weep guys.
Over and out.
They said “Lurch” for one, and two, no that is not his real name. That was a joke (and Addams Family reference). Look up Lurch, and you’ll see why. Hope that helps.
Season 7 Episode 8 (“My Manhood”). He tells Dr. Cox he has been called many horrible names, back stabber, zebra poacher, JOSH. He then goes on to say he’s accepted these because there is a degree of truth in each. Joe, she didn’t say Lynch. She said Lurch in reference to the tall creepy manservant on the Addams Family.
i had this in mind too. josh it could be. but who could be sure?
I’m thinking Joshua, as there is a little truth in people calling him “Josh” (My Manhood).
josh stands for janitor of sacred heart
i think is name is Jan Itor. he calls himself that several time throughout the seasons, and even calls him self dr. Jan Itor in “His Story III”
Supposedly we won’t find out ’til the final episode what Janitor’s name is ,but I think his name is Neil Flynn (which is the actors real name) and I’ll tell you why… We find out in one episode that Janitor plays the guy from “The Fugitive” if you watch the credits to that movie I’ll bet that it credits Neil Flynn to the role! Janitor= Fugitive guy, Fugitive guy= Neil Flynn, Janitor= Neil Flynn! VIOLA!
robbe your right. U bet me to it. lol. Logically his name has to be neil flynn which means he is playing himself.
Ok, a few observations:
Jan Itor – is just the word Janitor split in two.
In My Scrubs episode he is called Lurch (reference to Addams Show), not Lynch.
In My Buddies Booty no one calls his Tom, it is “tell’em”
In My Conventional Wisdom, we see Janitor talk to a coffee shop employee:
Janitor: “And that how I got me name”
Employee: “You do not look Asian”
Of course, Janitor is known to make things up, so there is no reason to believe it is true.
When he says “horrible names, back stabber, zebra poacher, Josh” it just meas that others called him that, not that its true.
As for “The Fugitive” episode. If no one at the hospital knows his name, there is no reason to believe anyone at the movie shoot did.
In the end, the Janitor already mentioned the name or did not, but know one would know if its true, cause he is always making things up.
Here is a “soap” opera potential:
In the episode after where JD’s dad died, his brother Dan keeps says “My dad died” and J.D. keeps correcting him: “Our Dad”. So it seems like Dan does not think they share a dad. Probably because the Janitor is J.D.’s real dad. Probably named Johny same as J.D. is. :-*)
(*gasp*
