I’m pretty much done with reality TV, but there are two mainstays that I still haven’t grown tired of yet. The first is obviously The Amazing Race, because that one just continues to be a solid competition, never trying to do more than it’s been good at for 11 seasons now.
But the second is American Idol (which returns on January 15th). Don’t ask me why, but every year I seem to get pumped to watch it. The advertisements begin ad nauseum and I start to remember how hilarious the previous season was, and soon enough, I’m looking forward to it.
Now, I will stipulate, and my wife will too, that I almost totally lose interest once you get to the final 12. Ironically, that’s when my wife gets MORE into the show than before.
I just enjoy the auditions and trying to predict the talent, and watching the idiots and losers who always think they can sing but can’t. And while Ryan Seacrest is everywhere lately and kind of getting annoying, he is awesome on this show and his reactions to the contestants are always great.
But once you get to the final 12, that’s when the long weeks begin of singing one night and the results show the next. It takes its toll after awhile and I usually tune out until it gets down to 4 or 5 left.
It all gets started again on January 15th, Entertainment Weekly reports, with 2 two-hour episodes the first week. The auditions will be aired up until February 6th, with the Hollywood rounds shown on the 12th and 13th.
The top 12 finalists will perform on March 11th, which will likely be the day I set my alarm and take a long nap.
Do you still get into the show? No matter what’s happened with it, the public still loves it and the ratings it gathers all season is absolute insanity.
Love American Idol – haven’t missed a season or an episode yet (at least not that I can remember missing – hmmm, I’m not sure how that works…).
Yeah – I’m jazzed about it starting back up. The auditions are fun to watch.

Yeah, I’m not sure why I keep watching it, but I always do.
So… how about Guess the Winner contest on your blog once we get our top 12?
AI is definitely getting tired, but the auditions are still fun. After that it’s gets too predictable. I’m convinced they manipulate the voting, which is why we had to endure Sanjia far too long last year.
Given that our options will likely be VERY limited this year…bring on the madness!

Is American Idol over yet?!?!?!….. America likes watching goofy people seeking their 15 min of fame, and are cancelling shows like journeyman. Granted eventual finalists may be talented, but I dont need battle of the choirs, american idol, americas got talent, dancing with the stars to dominate and replace creative writing and tv shows. Its a culture where we like to see others fail and perform worse than we do so we can all justify our existence.
Except Cap’n – nobody is writing right now – we are in the middle of a strike and as long as that continues we are going to be stuck with crap for programing. However, I think American Karaoke…err…Idol is a much better show than those other singing competitions that you mentioned. Look at the success and $$$ that some of those artists are now bringing in. At least it isn’t a fluke.

Yeah, thank god Sanjaya (sp?) is making millions!!!
It is a guilty pleasure… and I hate it that I watch it, since I despise the idea of “reality” TV and taking pleasure from watching other people suffer and fail. Every year I swear I’m not going to watch the show and then I get sucked right back in again. It’s like a car crash – you just can’t look away.
