The writer’s strike has been both good and bad for a lot of people (good because we’re finally free from the chains of too much TV and bad because we don’t get to watch new episodes of all our favorite shows every week). This news about the Golden Globe Awards is actually a bit of both good and bad.
And The Award For Best Drama Goes To…
The behind the scenes story of the awards show itself, I think. It’s been reported that actors and cameras will not be allowed at the actual awards show because of the strike. NBC has been pressing hard for the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. to live up to their contract and allow NBC to telecast the awards show with or without any stars present. Of course, no one watches it with the stars there so I’m not sure what NBC has to gain by showing it with no stars around.
Anyway, I’m guessing the HFPA doesn’t want to air it because of all the WGA picketers hanging around outside making a ruckus of themselves (you know how those writer types are).
Are Things Looking Up?
Not if you want to watch the show. There are signs that NBC is backing down from their threats and may let the show go on without being televised…even though they stand to lose $15M to $20M in ad revenue… Hmm…somehow I doubt their going to do that out of the goodness of their hearts.
I jest about no one watching the show, of course, as it’s actually (for some unknown reason) one of the higher rated specials on TV. NBC stands to lose a lot of money if the show doesn’t go on. So, they tighten the grip and the HFPA pushes the Actor’s guilds who then say they can’t do anything because they’re standing in Holy Alliance with their brothers in spirit in the WGA so they too must strike (and what would they say without someone providing words for their often empty heads?).
So, What’s Going To Happen?
Beats me. Everyone is set to make an announcement this afternoon laying it all out. Some people think the HFPA might just call off the awards show altogether and pass the awards out at lunch some day or maybe just tell the winners whose house they can pick it up at.
I think they’ll probably do some kind of show and that it probably won’t be on TV. There’s nothing to see here. What’s the point of handing out awards to a bunch of people who aren’t going to be there to pick them up? Who wants to see someone’s maid or driver go up on stage and accept for an actor on a show none of us probably watch anyway?
In the end I don’t think I really care because the Golden Globes kind of suck.
