More details have emerged over the past few days regarding “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins” the fourth film in the Terminator series (not to be confused with the television show soon to premiere on Fox called “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles“).
SCI FI Wire posted an interview with associate producer James Middleton, who revealed more details about the new trilogy.
“It’s set after the events of [Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines], where we see the nuclear exchange at the end of the movie, and we show what the world is like after this event, and we show how people try to deal in a post-apocalyptic world,” Middleton added. “And we introduce a new character, who becomes very important to the resistance and to John Connor, a new hero. It’s really about the birth of a new hero.”
The casting of Christian Bale was confirmed for the film (although not necessarily as John Connor) as was the non-casting of Arnold Schwarzenegger:
“He has been approached, and in the early days of our development of T4, one of our producers, Andy Vajna, who’s a good friend of his, spoke to him about doing a cameo,” Middleton said. “This was even before he was governor. But we know now that he is governor, he’s got priorities that are above doing movies. There is no possibility of Schwarzenegger appearing in Terminator Salvation or subsequent films as long as he is governor,” Middleton added.
Still not much is known about the mysterious new hero that Middleton mentions in the interview. Middleton did say that the character would NOT be Kyle Reese, however, the character from the first film who was played by Michael Biehn and who goes on to father John Connor.
I think the good news about the whole thing is that the movie will take place during the whole post-apocalyptic world war thing. Hopefully, the film will be chock full of tons of robot on human killing action…maybe with a little story thrown in. I think with the three other movies over like 15 years and now a TV show and everything it’s all getting to be too much to keep up with. I like the idea of the story, but I always thought it would be cool if it were to take place in the future. Looks like I might get my wish.
“Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins” is slated to hit theaters in 2009.
Why doesn’t James Cameron have any interest to return to the Terminator franchise? What is he doing these days?
He’s busy finishing up Avatar….
