The annual Academy Award nominations (Oscar nominations) from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences was announced this morning. As expected there were some surprises mixed along with the movies everyone pretty much expected to do well.
A Best Actress nomination for Laura Linney for “The Savages” and a Best Actor nomination for Tommy Lee Jones for “In the Valley of Elah” were slight surprises as neither had really built up much buzz in the early awards.
“Atonement” has led most of the early awards but actors Kiera Knightley and James McAvoy were both snubbed for nominations at the Oscars as was director Joe Wright who most assumed would be a sure thing. Taking his place is the surprise nomination of Jason Reitman of the much-loved “Juno.” Although the film has won over many fans and critics alike, most of the attention has not gone to the director.
Other notable snubs this Oscar season were past Oscar winner Angelina Jolie for “A Mighty Heart,” Helen Bonham Carter for “Sweeney Todd,” and Emile Hirsch for “Into the Wild” (all of which were thought to stand a good chance of picking up nominations). Sean Penn also missed out on a directing nod for “Into the Wild.”
Those snubs all pale in comparison to the snub for “Hairspray” which received exactly zero (0) nominations not even for Best Song, three of the five of which went to “Enchanted.”
