With the untimely death of Heath Ledger fresh in our minds, it brings to mind other young and talented actors who also died tragically in their 20s (Ledger was only 28).
James Dean, 24, died Sept., 30, 1955, after an automobile crash on the highway near Paso Robles, Calif.
Sharon Tate, 26, was murdered Aug. 9, 1969, by followers of Charles Manson in Los Angeles.
Freddie Prinze, 22, died Jan. 29, 1977, after shooting himself in Los Angeles.
Jon-Erik Hexum, 26, died Oct. 18, 1984, after accidentally shooting himself with a prop gun in Los Angeles.
Rebecca Schaeffer, 21, was murdered July 18, 1989, by stalker Robert John Bardo in Los Angeles.
Brandon Lee, 28, died March 31, 1993, after accidentally being shot on the set of "The Crow" in Wilmington, N.C.
River Phoenix, 23, died Oct. 31, 1993, from a drug overdose outside of a night club in Los Angeles.
David Strickland, 29, died March 22, 1999, after hanging himself in a hotel room in Las Vegas.
Jonathan Brandis, 27, died Nov. 12, 2003, from injuries he suffered after hanging himself in Los Angeles.
Brad Renfro, 25, died Jan. 15, 2008, the day after reportedly spending the previous evening drinking with friends.
I think this list just goes to show you that it doesn’t matter how young, successful, and vibrant you think you are, life can be fleeting. It’s also a good example of how we shouldn’t assume that success at something will make us happy. Some of the people on this list were very successful, but, obviously not very happy.
I thought Chris Farley might be on this list, but I guess he was in his 30s. It’s sad to learn that some that can bring joy to so many feel the need to take their own lives.
Yeah, Chris Farley was 33 when he died.
I’ve been scouring the Internet on this. It seems only the sleeping pills were on the bed. Other drugs “in the apartment” does not mean he was taking them at the time, but, as they say, it does sell newspapers. I read he’d been on a shoot for a month in freezing weather, had pneumonia and was having trouble sleeping. The maid heard him snoring at noon.
The former president of Herbalife, in a similar unexpected tragedy, who took antidepressants, had one glass of wine with friends one evening in his home in LA–celebrating a triumph–went upstairs not feeling well and was found dead shortly thereafter.
I guess I’m saying not all heroes who die young are sad. Chemistry, drug interactions, dosage–lots of things can conspire together.
I would not want to be found dead naked, however.
