Cloverfield mystery grows, sequel possible?

You probably don’t want to read much more of this blog post if you haven’t seen Cloverfield yet, but if you don’t care about spoilers and such, then by all means, keep reading!

It appears that the Cloverfield mystery and story hasn’t ended with the movie’s release on 1-18-08. Not by a longshot.

First off, there are people talking about the very end of the movie which has the happy couple two weeks in the past looking out on the ocean. Supposedly (and I apparently missed it), you can see something dark fall into the water aways out. Or maybe something else happens. In an SciFi.com interview with Matt Reeves, the director of the film, he has some VERY interesting things to say about it.

“Is there a creature?” he asked rhetorically. “I will tell you, there is something in that shot as well. There is something. You have to look at that shot. There is something going on in that shot. Whether or not it’s a creature or something else.”

Reeves added: “The thing about that shot is that almost nobody sees the shot, but once you see the shot and the thing in it, you’ll never stop seeing it.”

I really hate that I now want to go watch this movie again. Damn you Bad Robot Productions!

Now, the other thing that sort of brings a bit of closure to the film’s ending at least, is the website 1-18-08.com. There were new pictures posted on it after the movie came out, and I’ve taken some screen captures of them for your viewing pleasure below:

So this first photo looks like the creature was out at sea and the military rained down fire and damnation on the thing….

Now we see a lot of blood in the ocean, and I’m not sure what the fisherman is doing there other than perhaps trapping some other fish attracted to the blood, or Lord knows what else….

And finally we get a scene on the beach where it appear the monster or monsters washed ashore after being blown to pieces out in the ocean.

So if you take these pictures to mean anything…while our heroes died at the end, it looks like there was an actual victory by the military.

But now comes the big hint of a sequel.

There was a sound people heard during the credits that has been recorded and played back, and from it you gather it says:

“Help us…”

However, as everyone knows…J.J. Abrams projects are never what they seem. How many clips from Lost have had secret messages when played backwards?

So these crazy people who recorded that sound also played it backwards.

“It’s still alive…”

Granted, you have the photos above with the creature dead, and this sound clip says it’s still alive, but who cares! It’s awesome and I love the way J.J. Abrams does his marketing.

From the Pop Candy blog, a fan pointed out that Abrams said the marketing for Cloverfield would not end with the movie’s opening, so maybe we’ll get more and more stuff as time goes by.

Heck, they’ve already made over $20 million on the movie, they certainly have the funds to keep the mystery going.

Finally, from ComingSoon.net, there was an interview with Cloverfield director Matt Reeves, who puts the idea of a sequel out there, but perhaps a movie with a different viewpoint of the same events?

“This was so fun ’cause we’d never done anything like it, and I think we’d want to find a similar challenge, to find a way to have its roots in this but be fresh and new, otherwise you’re just repeating yourself. There’s a moment on the Brooklyn Bridge, and there was a guy filming something on the side of the bridge, and Hud sees him filming and he turns over and he sees the ship that’s been capsized and sees the headless Statue of Liberty, and then he turns back and this guy’s briefly filming him.

“In my mind that was two movies intersecting for a brief moment, and I thought there was something interesting in the idea that this incident happened and there are so many different points of view, and there are several different movies at least happening that evening and we just saw one piece of another. That idea sort of tickled me. We’ll have to see if anyone would want a sequel. If the movie does well and we find a compelling reason to do so then it would be fun to do a sequel.”

So there you have it. A fun movie I thought, with a potential for a sequel and at the very least some more photos to keep out appetites wet.
