Michael Bay’s production company, Platinum Dunes, has been tapped by New Line to re-launch Freddy Krueger and the “A Nightmare On Elm Street” movie series about the murderous psycho who haunts the dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep.
The Freddy Krueger character was originally played by Robert Englund and was featured in nine films and two TV series. “Nightmare” was New Line’s most lucrative film franchise until “The Lord of the Rings” came along. The first “A Nightmare On Elm Street” was written and directed by Wes Craven in 1984 and featured Johnny Depp in his first feature film role.
The relaunch of this film series comes just as Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes gets ready to relaunch another 1980s horror franchise, “Friday the 13th” starring the most famous Jason of all (I’m excluding myself, of course), Jason Voorhees. “Cloverfield” star Odette Yustman has just been tapped to star in that film, and Marcus Nispel will direct a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift (Freddy Vs. Jason). Filming will get under way in April.
Both franchises will be given a complete overhaul, or a re-imagining as many like to call it, similar to what Platinum Dunes provided in the Nispel directed “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” New Line will not be able to hire a writer for “Nightmare” until the writer’s strike ends.
I think this is one of horor movie which is very popular from time to time. Good to hear that this film will be relaunched. I hope the new relaunching will get more succes!

Yeah, I can’t imagine that people won’t turn out to see at least the first film in each of these series. If they’re done well we’ll probably see another ten films in each franchise…God help us all.
Interesting that both of these classics are getting a facelift. When they originally came out they were kinda campy and low-tech compared to today. I’d imagine they will be much better the second time and all the current genre fans will love them. I’m kinda curious myself.

I’m a little curious myself although I’m not really a fan of the originals. Out of the two franchises I would guess that this one would benefit the most from an update what with the new digital technologies and such.
I don’t know where you guys are from, but I have yet to see a horror movie make CG look scary, ever. And you KNOW Michael Bay’s gonna do the special effects in CG, because that’s the kind of douche he is.
I bet he includes a car chase too. WTF’s he doing, trying to make a horror flick anyway? He can’t even get action right.
