Sometimes you have to wonder how a guy like J.J. Abrams ever sleeps. Not only did his company produce the highly marketed Cloverfield, but he’s also got Lost going on right now and he’s filming the next Star Trek movie as well.
And right in the middle of all that, he’s getting ready to film his next TV series Fringe, will be premiere on FOX. It’s the fourth television series he’s put out, which includes the afore mentioned Lost, along with Alias and Felicity. All of those were highly successful, so there is no reason to think Fringe wont follow suit.
I didn’t even have to hear the plot to get excited about it. Just J.J. Abrams and the name “Fringe” was enough for me. But for those of you who CARE about that kind of stuff, here you go:
“Fringe centers on a young female FBI agent who is forced to confront the spread of unexplained phenomena and work with an institutionalized scientist whose work might be at the center of the coming storm.”
Mmmm…sounds very X-Files-ish which couldn’t possibly make me happier.
The scientist is named Walter Bishop and will be played by John Noble (pictured right), who was Denethor in Return of the King, plus has had a lot of television appearances on shows like Journeyman, 24 and The Unit.
What work is he performing and what “storm” is he at the center of? Who knows…can’t wait to find out.
Casting is still going on, but the FBI agent is named Olivia Warren and will be played by Anna Torv, who is one of the three lead characters of the show.
The interesting thing from reading about this show on IMDB, is that there are three others shows similar to the X-Files in nature coming out this fall: Warehouse 13 on SciFi, Section 8 on ABC and 11th Hour on CBS.
I have to think that Fringe will be the most promising considering the production studio it’s coming from.
Alex Graves will direct the show, and he comes from executive producer roles on Journeyman, as well as The Nine and The West Wing.
FOX has given Abrams and his Bad Robot production studios $10 million to produce the two-hour pilot, which was written long before the WGA Strike. Production begins in February. That’s a lot of money.
Is it a coincidence that the Lost pilot also cost approximately the same amount? Hmmmm.
Sound cool? You know I can’t ignore a science fiction television show, so here’s to hoping this gives me something good to watch if Journeyman never returns. *sigh*
Warehouse 13, Section 8, 11th Hour…weird coincidence that all the shows have numbers in the title…except Fringe? Or is there something else going on here…something dark and sinister?

This sounds NOTHING like Alias, it’s more like X-Files, Millennium if anything…it’s supernatural, paranormal, not a spy series.

To be fair, JJ Abrams has virtually nothing to do with Lost anymore–he’s just the name on the credits now. The same can probably be said about Cloverfield as well.

MI3 wasn’t horrible, but I really don’t think any of them other than the 1st was anything amazing. I don’t think Abrams ruined anything, it’s not like he took The Matrix and made Revolutions or anything
And I love Felicity too!
Ah – another JJ “Dynomite” Abrams offering. I will definitely catch the pilot (that might be all that ever gets broadcast with the strike).
At least it’s 2 hours long…
It wasn’t that MI-III was horrible it just felt a little too much like an Alias episode for me. I think JJ is very talented, I’d just like to see him break out of what he’s done and do something different.
