Entertainment Weekly did a serious interview with David Lindleof and Carlton Cuse this past week talking about Lost, where it’s going, what questions might be answered and what wont be.
They also talked about some things I thought were important, like how they don’t want the side viral websites and videos to be essential to the fans having to understand what’s happening on the show.
The Lost “Canon” is what they are calling stuff that is a legitimate part of the overall story, although it’s not all necessary.
CUSE: The mobisodes are in canon. The Orchid video is in canon. The videogame is not in canon. It’s unfair for the audience to go to ancillary sources in order to really understand the show. Even the things like the mobisodes, which are in canon, aren’t essential to your understanding of the show. These things are just added bonuses.
LINDELOF: The only true canon is the show itself.
I am pretty darned happy about that, because trying to keep up with viral sites is frustrating and rarely do I find the time to do it.
The interview talked about all kinds of things, like “a bracelet is sometimes just a bracelet.” The Naomi bracelet last episode wasn’t supposed to mean much, but now with the writer’s strike, the creators behind it can actually listen to viewer feedback and perhaps take that thing to mean something later.
DAMON LINDELOF: Naomi’s bracelet in the Sayid episode is a key point here. I got some e-mails from people who wondered if there was a connection between Naomi’s bracelet and the bracelet worn by the woman Sayid killed in his flash-forward. There is no connective tissue. Sometimes a bracelet is just a bracelet. We just thought it would be a cool emotional touchstone for Sayid; Elsa’s bracelet reminds him of Naomi. But some people interpreted that, ”Is there something more there?” We might need to address that.
Interesting.
They are going to be dealing with time a lot more, especially in episode five, so we’ll have to watch for that.
CUSE: For example, the fifth episode of the season [airing next week] deals with time travel and operates in different time periods. It was a tough story to break. But we adhere to our rule: no paradox.
The point of all the time discussion was to let us know that there IS a set timeline and we WILL get to Jack and Kate at the airport someday. It’s not going to be a story like Heroes where the future can be changed and we don’t really know what it will be like until the end.
Any answers?
We’ll find out who was in the coffin, but Jacob and the Cabin will likely remain mysteries through at least next season.
I invite you to go read the article before tonight, because there is a ton of good stuff in there, especially about the possibilities of the Oceanic 6 and that the idea of a group of people who put a fake plane at the bottom of the ocean with dead people in it must be extremely powerful.
Hmmm – either my previous comment was lost in the move or it was removed…
Good interview with Cuse and Lindelof as usual – those guys are a riot in interviews.

Yeah, yours might have gotten lost, I tried to do a quick import and we switched the sites over in like 10 minutes after that, but there was a chance at a lost comment.
