The second week of American Idol 2008 live performances is now complete. On Thursday night, the second group of four people, two men and two women, were cut from show, this time from the top 20 contestants. If you missed the performances you might want to check out our recaps of the shows:
After our reading our recaps and hearing what we had to say about the performances I hope you were as shocked as we were by the results. Although there’s always a chance with American Idol that it will go differently than you expect, this week’s results didn’t seem to make a lot of sense. The four we thought were the most likely to get voted off were:
- Luke Menard
- Jason Yeager
- Amanda Overmyer
- Kady Malloy
Concerning the men, I also said that, “Robbie could certainly take the place of one of them if the rocker votes are split enough.” I also had Alexandrea Lushington in my bottom three, but said that, “If there is an upset…I can almost guarantee the other person will be Alaina Whitaker.”
Well, I was right and wrong at the same time. The four contestants who actually got booted from the show were:
- Jason Yeager
- Robbie Carrico
- Alexandrea Lushington
- Alaina Whitaker

I was correct about Jason, but I really thought Luke would get the boot over Robbie. I was correct, however, in saying that Robbie could easily take the place of one of them if the rocker vote was split enough. It would appear as though that is precisely what happened.
As for the women, I simply rolled the dice and lost. The two women I chose and the two who were booted were all named as my bottom contestants. I ended up going with the two who survived. Once again, I was completely correct in saying that if there were an upset that Alaina Whitaker would definitely be going home.
Even though I had Alexandrea Lushington in my bottom three for the week I really thought she’d be given another chance. I guess that just goes to show you that on American Idol you have to bring it each and every week because you never know when you’ll get another chance.
The true travesty here is that Amanda Overmyer gets to remain in the competition despite a horrid performance simply because her style is so different from the others. Come on people, different doesn’t mean better! It just means different.

If you’re keeping score with the little side contest Jeff (from Static ThinkBox) and I have going… Jeff is now 5-3 by his count. I am 4-4 by his count. Although, I feel I should be given credit for both Robbie and Alaina since I did correctly call them…

I liked Alaina Whitaker, so that’s a bummer…she shouldn’t have gone yet…
No, Jason. You can only count those who you say will get cut. I had Alaina as a dark horse for getting cut too, but I said Kady would get cut. I was wrong, you were wrong, and America was wrong for not cutting Kady.
The point is to make a final decision and not say a bunch of maybe’s and think that’s good enough.
You can say you had called it in your post, but the cut decisions are what counts for us. Maybe we should have clarified the contest. It’s okay to lose to me. It’s been done many times before… LOL
By the way, those four pictures of the cut contestants look pretty familiar.

Wow, the “friendly” competition is starting to get hostile…
Are you both 5-3 now?
Jeff, you bring up a good and valid point in that we didn’t actually clarify any set of rules in this contest of ours… I did, however, say that I’m 4-4 according to YOU, and that you are 5-3, clearly allowing that you have the lead according to your rules (however, arbitrary they may be).
Oh, by the way, I did borrow those pictures from you. I’ll return them early next week if that’s cool…
I know where you got the pictures, but you can keep them.
Arbitrary, please. You have the arbitrary rules. You pick two guys and two girls. Either they get eliminated or they don’t. It’s as simple as that.
Ah, but your rules mean that I’m losing…there’s the rub…
It’s only one contestant off. You have to admit that Alexandrea was a great gut feeling on my part.
Lucky pick. If it had gone the way it should have, you’d be crying about how you made a dumb pick…
It doesn’t really matter much who goes right now – the majority of the people left are riff-raff. The top 5 or 6 should be pretty strong though, probably stronger than past seasons.
Ape said riff-raff… that makes me giggle.
The church we go to is called Lifechurch.tv, and we just found out tonight that Alaina went to our church but at the Oklahoma campus…
Wish they had let us all know, we may have been more inclined to vote!
booo… c’mon Mike – that is not reason to vote for someone.

Well, I don’t really start voting until the final 12 anyways, but she should have stuck around a bit longer anyways.
I don’t vote for any of them. I disparage them all equally and let God sort them out.
