American Idol 2008 - Top 10 Women Performances

The American Idol Top 20 continued last night with the Top 10 women performances. The women underwhelmed me last week, but I have to admit I thought they did much better this week. I think perhaps the illness many of them were suffering from last week was a bigger factor than they let on during the broadcast.

This week there were three women who I felt performed better than the rest of the women contestants.

  • Brooke White - I hate this song. So for Brooke to not only make me enjoy her performance but actually think she performed better than any other contestant means that she is a force to be reckoned with in this competition. She doesn’t have a huge voice but the tone and quality of her voice is unmistakable, and if she keeps making brilliant song choices like this one she’s going to be in the competition for a long time to come.

  • Kristy Lee Cook - An early favorite of mine who stumbled last week came out and showed us that she is ready to take this opportunity seriously. It still wasn’t the “blow me away” performance that I would like to see but Kristy doesn’t really have one of those big kind of voices. She leans more towards country so I think if she stays in the competition (which she certainly should) she’ll start showing us much more of that side of herself.

  • Syesha Mercado - The judges didn’t seem to like her performance that much, but I thought the quality of her voice was unmistakable. This might not have been the perfect song for her but it is obvious she has oodles of talent, and she still managed to have one of the best performances of the night.

All three of these performers should find themselves safe tonight. Despite what the judges might have said, their talent and performances have shown through and I think America will respond by voting for them.

Not so lucky, will be two of the three people who I feel had the worst performances of the night last night.

  • Amanda Overmyer - I have never been a fan of Amanda. I think I mentioned before how I don’t like anything about her. Last night’s performance just reinforced my already strong opinions. Her performance was a train wreck. It was awful. It was, by far, the worst performance of the night…probably of the week. Hopefully, she’ll be an easy choice to say goodbye to tonight.

  • Alexandrea Lushington - I actually like Alexandrea’s voice and style, but I think she picked a poor song last night. The judges were right to call her out on it. The song really didn’t allow her to show what she can do. In fact, it was pretty forgettable for the most part.

  • Kady Malloy - Why Kady, why? Why must you spell your name with a D and not a T? And why did you pick this stupid song? I’m full of questions for Kady. Kady should be one of the favorites with the way she looks and can impersonate certain pop stars, but Simon is right about how all of her talent seems to get left behind when she walks out onto the stage. This was yet another poor performance from Kady.

All three of these women are in danger of being voted off tonight. However, I think that Amanda and Kady are the two who are the most likely to get kicked out. Alexandrea has obvious talent and simply chose a poor song. In fact, she wasn’t even that bad. Amanda could possibly pull off an upset if there are enough gay/gothic/hard rock girls out there who vote to save her (I’m just guessing that’s her audience).

If there is an upset and only one of my three gets cut I can almost guarantee the other person will be Alaina Whitaker. I didn’t put Alaina in my bottom three because I’m a sucker for the song she sung (hey, I love Grease, what can I say) and I didn’t think she was that bad. But I can certainly see where she might not have enough fans to keep her in the competition. If there’s an upset, she’s it.

The remaining three women, Carly Smithson, Ramiele Malubay, and Asia’h Epperson are probably safe based mostly on what they’ve done in the past. I’ve been completely underwhelmed with Carly for two straight weeks now, but the judges are still hot on her for some reason. I can tell she has a good voice, but she isn’t doing anything to show it. The other two both did fairly well last night. I didn’t think Asia’h failed at her Celene Dion attempt nearly as badly as the judges did. Both girls were also great last week which should be enough to keep them safe tonight.

  1. Amanda needs a new hairdo, I mean, come on.

But I loved Brook White! She was fantastic, and a good song choice…and quite possibly meant for Simon :)

  2. I don’t know if I believe the coincidental comment. It seems awfully suspicious.

I guess you could say great minds think alike… but still. Anyway, for some reason, I think Amanda will get enough votes despite the absolutely horrible hair. I’ve got a great graphic of Amanda on my site. (***shameless plug)

  3. 2 weeks in, and I think the men still out performed the women this week (and the men werent overall spectacular)…

  4. Amanda totally picked the wrong song. Kansas was a great band and that was/is a great song. However, it was just too much for her to handle and she definitely needs to heed Randy’s advice if she escapes being sent home tonight. That was the worst performance not just of the last two weeks - but probably of all seven seasons - absolutely terrible.

I think the top three from last night were: 1. Carly Smithson, 2. Asia’h Epperson, and 3. Kristy Lee Cook

  5. I agree with the Cap’n the the men are out performing the women. I don’t even think it is close yet. It’s like the Cardinals playing in the NFL - they are way out of their league… :)

  6. I am not a fan of Kristi Lee Cook’s performance style… she stands weird and makes too many facial expressions. It really is uncomfortable for me to watch.

And Jason, I think it is good that you finally exposed yourself as a true fan of Grease. This is one of the things we should all know about you. Are you slicking back your hair as we speak?

  7. Which Jason?

    :)

  8. looks like Kady took the “Heart” out of Magic Man. That was an awful rendition of a classic 70’s tune.

  9. speaking of heart, I actually think Carly did a pretty decent job with crazy on you.

  10. @ Mike - the vain one…

  11. Hey…

I’ll have you know, I always wear my hair slicked back like this…

  12. Ape, you really think Carly was the best? Really? I mean, really? Someone likes chicks with tattoos or something…

I do agree with those who say the men are outperforming the women so far.

  13. I can’t believe I’m still watching A.I. I’m still waiting for someone to impress me. For the most part, I yawn thru the whole show. I’m just not interested in anyone. The only person who sparked my interest got cut during Hollywood week. (A moment of silence, please, for Josiah Lemming.) The performers this year are just more of the same.

  14. @ Jason (not Bourne) - yes, I really did think Carly was the best last night. It has nothing to do with tattoos either. She has consistently done one thing rather well - pick the right song for her voice. That ability will carry her far into the competition.

There are some people on this show who are much better singers than what we have seen. Their problem is that they chose terrible songs and will probably never get another chance, on this show at least, to prove what they really are able to do.

  15. I was already to start in with a break down of last nite, but first; Jason, a fan of Grease? Seriously? We’re going to have to ask you to turn in your Man-card. :-)

Overall, the women have been pretty mediocre, the men haven’t blown me away, but they are much better at this point. From last nite, I agree with the ‘Ape’, Carly, Kristy Lee and Asia’h we tops. I definitely think Amanda’s going home along with either Alaina or Kady. One last thought Brooke was good, but I didn’t think she was as good as some thought. The Carly Simon thing will get old quick.

  16. @ Scotty - “The Carly Simon thing will get old quick.” - yeah, like when Carly Simon originally did it…

  17. I’m with the Ape on the Carly Simon thing…never have liked her stuff.

But I feel I must defend my manhood. Grease is a classic and manly musical filled with manly men doing manly stuff and the women who obey them…or something like that. Grease 2 is more girly but still good.

  18. Ok Jason check this:

Grease had no nudity, no actual fight scenes - they decided that with a car race, and consisted of 30 somethings still trying to finish high school.

We own the Grease DVD, but it belongs to my WIFE!

    LOL

  19. No nudity, what’s the point?

  20. Mo, its a guy thing you wouldnt understand =)

  21. @ Cap’n - classic!

The Trousered Ape’s last blog post..Red, The New Blu

  22. That might have been classic if I had said there wasn’t enough singing in it, but I mentioned NUDITY for crying out loud! :)

  23. Jeff, any man that puts on a mustache and a dress and pretends to be a private eye while sitting on the toilet while his wife takes pictures of him…can’t say anything about another man liking Grease.

And, Mike, I don’t think I care to see John Travolta naked. Maybe you do. Maybe that’s your thing…

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…
