The Friday Question - Musicals

“And these are a few of my favorite things…”

Oh yeah, this is going to be fun.

What is something guys hate most in the world? Chick flicks, ballet and probably musicals.

Ah, but I also don’t think guys hate them as much as they say they do. Just like how we don’t admit we cry at movies, we also have probably seen a musical we secretly loved. Or at least, no one saw us tapping our toes.

The thing is, there have been some decent musicals out there and I’m curious what your favorite one is. And this isn’t just for guys of course, but any women out there should answer as well.

I’m actually very curious what the answers will be. I will totally accept “I hate them, I don’t like any!” but I may call you a liar. *grin*

My answer would be The Sound of Music, although Moulin Rouge is a close second.

Brigita from the Sound of MusicWhen I was a kid, I probably saw Sound of Music as many times as I saw Star Wars. I don’t know why, but I’m sure it might have had to do with the SLIGHT crush I had on Brigita —  – >

I am pretty sure I know all the words to all the songs and while it likely immasculates me to admit it, I am proud to do so.

As far as Moulin Rouge, I think I enjoyed that for the mere shock of realizing that Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor could actually SING!

There have been a ton of musicals out there, many I’ve not seen, especially the older ones, so I’m looking forward to unique answers from you guys.

If you are a girl, I can’t wait to see your responses, and if you are a guy, do you have the guts to admit your favorite?

With that…I ask you: What is your all-time favorite movie musical?

  1. Well, this proves it, you can create any identity online. You can even be a GIRL posing as a guy. :)

  2. I watched Moulin Rouge about 8 times and really loved it. Kiwanisqaatia (sp?) was a really great musical that will leave your head reeling, but does not have any singing.
Oh, let me not forget, The Man eating plan Movie- I love “Suddenly Simor”.
    Others:
Dirty Dancing- which is in the musical section
And one that I can’t remember the name to with all those guys who sing and dance. “Let’s do it for america”
    Robinhood- Men in tights.
I’m a big proponent of not thinking all musicals are lame just because a couple were.

  3. Jess - NICE one in Dirty Dancing, I’m ashamed that I forgot about it when writing this blog, because that is a huge guilty pleasure for me, especially the last song. If that movie is on, we always stop and watch the end…

@ Hay - way to skip the question you twit :)

  4. Rocky Horror Picture Show - Let’s do the time warp again

The Wall - I have become comfortably numb

Heavy Metal - You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars

    Tommy - He’s a pinball wizard

These two are more music documentaries but I’ll throw them in anyway.

    The Decline of Western Civilization
    The Last Waltz

  5. I’ve not seen any of those…man.

Is Spinal Tap considered a musical? :)

  6. ….”Ah, but I also don’t think guys hate them as much as they say they do.” No, we do hate them… that and the Queen… =D

  7. lol :)

  8. Because I sign with initials it may not be clear. I’m a guy; I love musicals.

Favorite *movie* musical would probably be Guys and Dolls, with Camelot and Man of La Mancha running a close second/third.

Staged musical would be Sweeney Todd.

Though I shouldn’t ignore some other gems of the screen:
    - Monty Python’s Meaning of Life
    - West Side Story
    - How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (better on stage, though the film’s not bad)
    - Anything Fred Astaire ever touched
    - Singin’ in the Rain
    - South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut
    - Cannibal: The Musical
    - Team America (so ends the Matt & Trey secition)
    - The Wizard of Oz
    - Fiddler on the Roof

  9. As a homage to my childhood, I will have to go with Grease. It’s a classic. But I liked the addition of Dirty Dancing in these comments. And after this year, I would have to say Once should be added to the list - while not a typical musical, I think it still fits.

  10. R.A., did you see Sweeney Todd when it was in theaters?

  11. Grease (the movie), Moulin Rouge, and just about any movie musical suck. Exceptions going to Sound of Music, Little Shop of Horrors, and Frank C’s list.

That being said stage musicals make me want to kill my TV, there is no comparison, they are THAT much better. In no particular order here are some of my favs

Rent, Wicked, Ragtime, Les Miz, Jersey Boys, Movin Out. The biggest difference between stage and screen is that actors are phenomenal singers, not actors who can barely hold a tune…if I’m being honest (insert Simon Cowell accent here).

  12. I did see Sweeney, and I’ll probably buy it, but it is *nothing* like the stage version. Johnny has about a fifth as his range (I exaggerate…it’s probably a *full* octave) and they sucked most of the humor out. It was…okay.

To Scott’s comment about stage actors being phenomenal singers…apparently he’s never seen Matthew Broderick. Matthew’s an adequate singer, who has to work with a vocal coach pretty much daily while performing, but that doesn’t really matter. His acting ability more than makes up for it. Suffice it to say, I was happy I saw H2S on B’way the week I did and not the next. I saw it in the final week of his run. His replacement: John Stamos. Better singer, not nearly as good an actor.

  13. The Wizard of Oz
    The Sound of Music
    Pink Floyd - The Wall
    Oklahoma
    Annie
    Little Shop of Horrors
    Beauty and the Beast
    The Music Man

There are others that had a bunch of music in them (where that was the theme of the movie) but they were not musicals…

  14. The Sound of Music is great, and I liked Moulin Rouge and Sweeney Todd. It also depends on what is considered a musical. I like Moulin Rouge but hated Chicago.

The best musicals are the ones where the songs forward the story, unlike Chicago where the music pops in during a scene and has nothing to do with what is really going on.

  15. Grease (1 and 2 - yeah, I’m a rebel), Hello Dolly (I was in the play once), Wizard Of Oz is a given, anything with Crosby and Hope (if those count), but especially White Christmas (I know that counts). I’m not crazy about the modern stuff. I hated Moulin Rouge.

  16. The Sound of Music hands down. I also love The Music Man and Mary Poppins.

  17. White Christmas is a great one Jason, I love that movie.

  18. I can’t pass up on a viewing of Grease. Hairspray was a good musical too.
