I’ve been a big fan of R.E.M. for a long time, but it’s not like I run out and buy every album or follow them around the concert scene. I took my wife to an R.E.M concert in Glendale, AZ, back in the mid-90′s and that was a blast, but it’s the only time I’ve seen them live.
So it’s no wonder that the fact that they have a new album has snuck up on me (actually, most things musical “sneak up” on me).
It’s called Accelerate and it will be out in stores on April 1st. You can pre-order it on Amazon.com now, for those of you old school peeps who still like shiny disks (I’m one of them).
The review for it on Spin.com is pretty good and makes me want to buy this thing the day it comes out. They talk about R.E.M.’s previous album, Around the Sun and how it was disappointed, not to mention plodding and slow at times.
Well, with Accelerate, they get back to their up-tempo style that makes them so great. Spin says if there was such an award for it, they should win “most improved.”
If you want to read the entire review, check it out over on Spin.com.
I have to say, I’ve listened to one of the new songs from the album, Supernatural Superserious, and I can’t stop playing it over and over and over. I already need it on my iPod and possibly move it up to Mix CD status. It’s that good.
Check it out for yourself below and let us know what you think. Can’t wait for this album.
On a side note, I really dig their album cover just up to the right. Black and white, artsy looking, with a zooming REM logo that looks a bit out of the 70s. I love the buildings being warped too.
Okay, now watch the video, it’s fantastic.

Love REM and this feels alot like their better stuff from the 80′s and 90′s. I’ll have to add this to iTunes when it comes out, since I’m not a 8 Track…errr..I mean CD guy anymore.
Scotty Dub’s last blog post..What’s your greatest weakness?
I always look forward to REM releases. Michael Stipe is awesome!
Ugh…guess who just got crossed off my “never gonna invite over to the house again” list? YOU…
Are you serious? REM? Dude, I could painfully look the other way with the waterworks and chick flicks. I could even ignore the lying about being married and then toting around a cardboard cutoff of “the wife” a la J.D. and Rusty. I have even chalked up your cheering for the Cardinals as just being young and impressionable and a phase you would grow out of.
But REM? Where is your pride? This is where I draw the line…I’m truly stunned.

Even if you did invite me, I’d be out of the country, so does it really matter if I’m not on the list?
Not really – but now it’s all about the principle of the matter.

You know you’ve just insulted everyone else who commented here, plus a guy I know at work.
I know that I am a girl… which may negate this comment… but… Ape, I had no idea you are a REM-hater. Wow! That’s all I have to say… Wow!
lol – I doubt it – it’s just my opinion.
However, I can think of several other bands/artists that I would rather listen to than REM…
1. Right Said Fred (the entire album)
2. William Hung
3. Yoko Ono solo material
4. Any of these previous American Idol auditioners…http://www.itsfunnyhoney.com/video/157/worlds_worst_auditions_part_2
5. Myself
6. Abba

@ Jina – yeah, not a fan at all…
It actually stems from some things that Stipe said in an interview a long time ago and it rubbed me the wrong way and ever since then I haven’t been able to stomach them.

I have such fond REM music memories. Like trying to sing all the words to “it’s the end of the world as we know it.” I’m not sure if I will love their new stuff but they were huge back in the day!

[...] not a big REM fan the reason why is Michael Stipe. There was a post regarding REM’s new album Accelerate posted over at PopCritics, and I sort of let loose on a tirade, a la Perry Cox, of things that I [...]
