This is sort of a bummer news story to start a weekend, but the entire world wide web is reporting that Jericho was canceled by CBS today, a second year in a row that the show has gotten the axe.
Last year it was raised from the dead by fans with a “nuts” campaign, but it worked only long enough to get us 7 episodes for season 2.
After March 25th’s finale, that will be it. Jericho is no more. The network released this statement:
“The March 25 episode of Jericho will be the series finale. Without question, there are passionate viewers watching this program; we simply wish there were more. We thank an engaged and spirited fan base for keeping the show alive this long, and an outstanding team of producers, cast and crew that went through creative hoops to deliver a compelling, high quality second season. We have no regrets bringing the show back for a second try. We listened to our viewers, gave the series an opportunity to grow, and the producers put a great story on the screen. We’re proud of everyone’s efforts.”
About a week ago we reported that the writers and producers of Jericho had filmed two different finales, just in case they got the bad news. One was to end in a cliffhanger, the other was to give fans closure on the series.
I guess we’ll be getting that ending afterall. With Jake and Hawkins on their way to Cheyenne, I predict we’ll see them stop the bomb and help end the ruling of Jennings and Rall.
I’m sad to see the show go, but mostly because I really enjoyed it, not that it was some high-quality production that deserves saving. As fun as it is, it in no way measures up to shows like Lost, Battlestar Galactica, etc.
It was just a popcorn-flick type of entertainment which I loved and I’ll shed a little tear for the town of Jericho next week.
Well, it was completely expected, but it still sucks. I’ve enjoyed this show pretty much from day one. This season was a lot different from last year, but I still enjoyed where they’ve taken the story. It stinks to think of all the other crap that stays on the air while good shows get canceled.
