Last week I passed on the unsubstantiated rumor that Clint Eastwood’s next film entitled Gran Torino might actually be the sixth film in the Dirty Harry franchise. There’s a couple of semi-valid reasons to think that might actually be the case, but there are a lot of other reasons to think it’s probably not.
FilmJerk posted a nice little article outlining why they think Gran Torino will not be Dirty Harry 6. They also provide the plot synopsis for the film they think it will actually be.
…this will be a simple, quiet and compelling drama about Walt (Eastwood), a rural bigot who finds his outlook on life changed after a family of Hmong immigrants move in to the home next to his own, striking up a friendship with the family’s teenaged son Tao over the older man’s now-classic car.
I tend to think that FilmJerk probably has it more right than all those other rumors. The Dirty Harry thing just doesn’t sound like something Eastwood would be interested in doing right now while an Oscar type drama is exactly what you would expect from him. That’s not to say I’m not a little disappointed. I think a Dirty Harry film could have been a lot of fun. Still, I think I’d rather see Hollywood do something new than continue to redo and reimagine old properties.
What do you think? Does this plot sound more plausible than Dirty Harry 6? Would you be disappointed if this turned out to be true?
I think if they tweak the movie name a bit to Grand Torismo, we could have a movie where we watch Clint play a video game…
We could leave the plot the same with one minor adjustment:
“…striking up a friendship with the family’s teenaged son Tao over the boy’s love for the video game Grand Torismo and Walt’s love for smashing things.”
Hilarious
Yeah Jason, now THATS sales pitch for a movie I like that idea!!! =D
Let me type it up and send it to them. It’s gotta be better than the Street Fighter remake…or the original for that matter.
“an Oscar type drama is exactly what you would expect from him.”
I’d be disappointed for precisely that reason. A final Dirty Harry movie is just about the last thing you’d expect him to do- and that’s pretty much the way he’s operated his entire career.
It would also be a LOT harder to pull off such a movie in a convincing manner- whereas he could probably do the “Oscar type drama” in his sleep at this point.
After five prestige films in a row, I secretly hope he has one last trick up his sleeve for us.
If Eastwood is going to pull a trick out of his sleeve I hope it’s a big one – huge. I hope he’s in Bulgaria directing the next Rambo!
[...] Eastwood will make this his next project after he finishes Gran Torino (you know, the project that’s not a Dirty Harry film). [...]
