Good episodes of the CW’s long-running Superman series, Smallville, seem few and far between these days. Things have gotten convoluted and progression along the Superman mythology path seems to be moving at a snail’s pace.
On one hand, I enjoy the struggle Clark has with believing in his destiny, but at some point, with Jor El, Chloe and everyone else who knows his secret telling him that his future is bigger than Smallville, you’d think he’d get the hint.
Regardless of all that, last week’s episode, Traveler, was pretty darn good. You get Clark being captured in pretty ingenious holding cell by Lionel Luthor, who tasks Chief Tyrol from Battlestar Galactica to watch over him.
Nice to see the Chief guest starring in Bionic Woman and now Smallville.
We find out that a group called Veritas has been meeting for a long time, knowing that the arrival of a Traveler required them to protect him. Lionel is the only one apparently still alive, as Dr. Swann’s daughter, Patricia, confronts him on the whole thing. She accuses him of killing off the others, including her father.
We know that Lionel has been protecting Clark for awhile now, but in this episode he goes a bit too far as he captures him to save him from being found. Was a bit of a stretch for me, but one that was interesting nonetheless. Sometimes men have misguided views on how to save someone.
One thing that bothered me about the scene though was that Clark actually fought off his first attacker, but just stood there letting all the other Kryptonite darts nail him. The guy moves faster than a speeding bullet, yet couldn’t move out of the way?
Kara regains her memory by taking a trip to The Fortress and busts Clark out of prison. Was a fun scene and FINALLY Kara is proven useful on the show.
The end was fantastic, with Lex being shown as the man behind it all, the guy responsible for killing everyone in Veritas but his father, and then adds another tally mark to his list as he has Patricia whacked as well.
All that is left is his father. And that brings us to the spoilers from the upcoming episode on April 17th when one main character will die.
I’m starting to think this episode set it up, and Lex will be the one to finally get rid of his father, to murder Lionel Luthor. I think that is the only real death that will seem fitting for me.
It will have a ring of evil to it, the son killing the father. It has to happen, because Lionel knows Clark’s secret and him being alive prevents Clark from becoming who he will be one day.
What do you Smallville fans think? Great episode? Who do you predict will die on April 17th?
This was a SUPER episode… so to speak. FINALLY it regained glory of awesomeness! Lets hope it continues, but I didnt think the episode …”with Lex being shown as the man behind it all, the guy responsible for killing everyone in Veritas but his father,” did this. I dont think it said Lex was responsible, it wasnt until we chatted about it on sunday that I even considered it was Lex who took out the others in the group, I dont think the show stated that was the case, i thought he whacked Patricia just to get her info, but I could be slow and this wasnt clear to me.
GREAT episode!!
I think that was the whole point of showing him at the end, but yeah, I could be wrong.
Still…good episode
No I agree with you he was setting up his dad, I think thats smart actually, but I dont think Lex killed off everyone, maybe he did but I didnt think the episode said that. I think Lionel wanted to see the evidence so he could see it was Lex…. still why have cheif take down Clark and put him in a Kryptonite cage then…and allow him to be tortured…tough call…I like your premise on this, I hadnt thought of it…
The only reason I THINK they wanted us to believe that is because there was no proof Lionel did it and so far, he’s been trying to protect Clark and we are pretty sure he’s being truthful about that, even if he goes about it the wrong way.
Showing Lex at the end made it seem to me that they were showing all of us just how evil he is…that he’s killed them all…yet his father is the one alive still, and while that makes him look suspicious, it also totally fits with Lex killing them all but his father.
Until April 17th!!!
One had to be following the Justice and Doom game, but Lionel had the Queens killed in an airplain crash. Remember the headline in the Pilot? It said Queen CEO missing? So, how would a 9 year old Lex kill them off? Also, Lex had little to no memories of the past that he blocked off due to how bad they were. He even blocked out that his mother killed Julian. I didn’t even watch the show, but I do recall that Lex was about to kill Jason, but stopped, because Jason was going to tell him something about Clark, but LIONEL shot Jason before he could tell Lex. Somehow, Jason survived and came back to die by meteor shower (I still don’t get that).
Lex did kill Patricia, but to say that he killed them all, is streching it.
Hmmm…Misty, thank you for that, I forget a lot of stuff that happened early on, so thank you for correcting me on that.
I guess Lex was just responsible for Patricia’s death…just weird that he offed her for no real reason?
Ohhh Misty good point… I forgot about the Doom game and headlines, which is supposed to come back into play later in the season, I remember reading an interview with the shows producers who said it would later down the line, so good point it would have to of been Lionel. Also, I think Lex wanted her locket as he thinks its a key or whatever else she had he wanted…Lex is clearly on the dark side… he’s probably going to off younglings next…
