Here's something from wikipedia: Ground rules for story development were established at the outset. Part of the marketing pitch, "no flights, no tights" dictated that Clark would not wear the Superman costume, nor would he fly. There is a huge difference between Decent and Descent. :)

They've said on a number of occasions that Lex "will be pushed over to the dark side," this is something like the 3rd time they've said it.
