The reality program, Survivor, on CBS has long been known as much for the exotic locales and the beautiful scenery captured for the show as it has for the backstabbing and mental breakdowns that have defined the reality part of the equation. The show has traveled all over the world from Australia to China, from Taiwan to Micronesia.
Fans will soon get an extra treat as Survivor will make the HD jump this summer when they film the 17th edition of the show. Survivor will be the first CBS reality show to make the HD jump, via Sony’s XDCAM production system. Executive producer Mark Burnett is calling it a “new era” for the show. Many others are saying, “it’s about time.”
A majority of the scripted television programs now routinely film in HD although many of the reality shows still do not. Survivor is one of the biggest shows that still films in the old 480i. With Survivor making the switch it seems that most other show of this nature will probably be forced to consider making the switch as well if they want to compete.
Survivor makes it to HD before Scrubs…I don’t get it.
I wonder how these dirty survivors will look in HD after a few weeks
I don’t know how I’m going to beat Cap’n Schwartz or the Trousered Ape in comments…so here’s another one… Whoo hoo! I’m up to ten!
We might start seeing more underarm hair…
Might have to re-tune in for survivor….
Jason, was that a comment about Survivor, or your wife?
LOL – That was a bit unfortunate.
It was meant as a response to Mike’s comment on how the Survivors might look in HD.
I knew what it was about
No longer watching survivor, but I would think going HD will be a nice enhancement for them considering their filming locations.
However, Mike & Jason may have a point re the dirty survivors and armpit hair.
If I start watching it again I bet I’ll stop once Michael Johns gets eliminated…
Cap’n, if you’ll start watching Survivor again, I’ll promise you that Michael Johns will NEVER get eliminated…
Well between now and then I have to start and finish Lost as well, but by next HD Survivor perhaps I can give it a chance…
All over the world, in the same bit of Asia?
A few excursions aside, they do need some more variety. I can understand the reasons why a cold place would be less attractive to the producers and viewers, but they’re really all pretty much the same place.
@Robert, I totally agree. I’d love for them to try something, anything new location-wise.

Yeah, it would be nice to see them facing some different climates, but the truth is, it would be bad for ratings if they put them in cold weather (no clothes are coming off in the Arctic) and people would rather see them near a beautiful beach than a desert.
Have them all try and survive downtown LA… that would be the real test!!!
Put ‘em up in the mountains and force them to wear spandex!
