I heard rumors of a new pilot coming this fall to the NBC lineup called Crusoe, but I hadn’t seen much follow-up to it until today.
The lead has been cast for this new series based off the classic novel by Daniel Defoe. Philip Winchester will play Robinson Crusoe, a man who leaves his wife in the pursuit of an adventure, only to shipwreck and land on a deserted island where he lives for 28 years.
Winchester hasn’t been in too many big name films yet, but he is in the upcoming Solomon Kane that I’m looking forward to.
Now I read Robinson Crusoe as a kid and of course totally loved it. I was huge fans of this book and The Swiss Family Robinson by Robert Louis Stevenson. There was something thrilling and exciting about reading stories in which people were castaways on strange islands trying to survive.
Nowadays, those kinds of stories are all over the place, from Castaway with Tom Hanks to Lost (which returns this week, woo!).
Crusoe’s wife, Susannah, will be played by Anna Walton (Hellboy II), and I’m curious how that is going to work in the overall plot. Is this going to be a show with flashbacks? What’s the overall plot and story arch here?
Is this going to be a standard drama, or are we looking at a serialized show?
What about Friday, the servant he saves from the cannibals?
Stay tuned for more information as we get it. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the show is set to air on Friday nights, which kind of doesn’t bode well for it already.
It doesn’t sound too interesting to me… but I was totally enamored by the Swiss Family Robinson’s tree house when I was little, so I’ve got that going for me…
I agree with Jina… seems old…we’ve seen these havent we, heck its survivor every week, right? I’ll pass on this…
Yeah, not sure this is series material, but hey, Knight Rider made it…twice, so who knows. One of two things will happen; a. I’ll love it, so it will get canceled after a few weeks (see Journeyman) or b. I’ll hate it, and it will be on forever (see Medium).
Scotty Dub’s last blog post..‘My Beautiful Mommy’; a children’s tale on why Mommy’s boobs are bigger or a sign of the apocolypse?
It might make a good movie, but stretching it out even over just a single season is going to take some work. I’m not sure that multiple episodes of him wandering around either not speaking or talking only to himself, at least until Friday shows up, will be very interesting.
Yeah, there has to be some sort of other “arch” to the story to make it interesting. Something mystical, something to give it a reason for being on the air
Well, at least they cast a fabulous lead! Philip is a great guy and a wonderful actor! Can’t wait to see him on a weekly basis!
