A decent week in DVD releases, we have monsters, wars, savages, orphanages and football. The downside to everything is that the Blu-Ray titles this week are pretty scarce. Especially for one specific title that would really be awesome in high-def…and that is…
Cloverfield
The vomit-inducing monster film that I totally dug is out on DVD this week, but sadly not on Blu-Ray. It has a ton of extras I hear, including a couple of alternate endings.
If you haven’t seen it, you should rent it. Likely the motion-sickness wont be happening on the little screen, so it should be a fun watch. (Amazon)
Charlie Wilson’s War
A fun little movie with Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Phillip Seymore Hoffman. Hoffman is the best part of this film, and was nominated for a supporting actor Oscar. It’s based on true events that happened during the Cold War in the 1980s. (Amazon)
The Orphanage
Not sure if I will ever rent this, but it seems pretty interesting. It’s got a 7.8 rating on IMDB, won about 25 miscellaneous movie awards last year and is out on Blu-Ray. It’s a Spanish horror film set in an orphanage, where a kid starts talking to an imaginary friend.
Umm…kids talking to other kids in scary movies…no thanks. Creepville. (Amazon)
Friday Night Lights: Season 2
FNL had a spectacular first season, started off a bit slow in season 2, but really got good again. There will definitely be a third season, so if you want to catch up on this totally underrated series, now is the time. (Amazon)
The Savages
Another Phillip Seymore Hoffman film, this time he stars alongside Laura Linney (from John Adams recently) as a siblings who have to care for their ailing father. Great reviews, this was recommended by Richard Roeper this week on his show. (Amazon)

Several good movies released this week. Loved Cloverfield. Can’t wait to see Charlie Wilson’s War. Will probably check out The Savages – anything with Hoffman is usually worth checking out. One of my favorite actors.

Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are a classic combination… Charlie Wilson’s War made me feel better about U.S. foreign intervention, it seemed to work out, though that time our intervention was in response to another country’s invasion

Yeah Patrick, I agree…good combination, although I still think Hoffman is what made that movie awesome.
