Mel Gibson has finally found a movie he wants to star in. Gibson hasn’t starred in a movie since 2002 when he had the back to back hits of Signs and We Were Soldiers. He took off the intervening years to direct 2004′s The Passion of the Christ and 2006′s Apocalypto (and possibly to lay low after a drunken run-in with police led to some Jew-bashing).
The 52-year-old Gibson has now committed, however, to starring in a film called Edge Of Darkness which is based on a BBC mini-series. Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, GoldenEye) will direct the feature adaptation of the six-hour 1985 BBC miniseries, which Campbell also directed.
The film will take place in Boston and Gibson will play a straitlaced police investigator whose activist daughter is killed. He plunges into the case only to uncover systemic corruption that led to his daughter’s death.
Daily Variety notes that Gibson had long been a fan of the miniseries, and was receptive when producer Graham King and director Martin Campbell approached him several months ago. Shooting on the project begins in Boston in August. William Monahan wrote the script, and Graham King is producing through his GK Films. Michael Wearing, who produced the original, will also produce, and the BBC will be involved in a producing capacity.
I’m glad to see Gibson finally getting back to acting. I’ve always been a fan of his and it’s been a long time since we’ve seen him in anything. I’m also a fan of director Martin Campbell who I think made two of the best James Bond movies of all. I’m looking forward to seeing what they can put together on this one.
Its been a while since we’ve seen him on screen, so time to put out another… it would be ironic if his character will arrest someone in a drunken racist rage…
Having been a fan of the original miniseries, I’ll say that Mel can pull off the somber, rather depressed nature of the original detective Craven (?) (think Lethal Weapon Mel minus the crazy and badass), but to be honest with you I’m concerned about how it’s all going to be re-written. Hopefully they don’t give him much control over the content, though maybe I blame him for Randall Wallace’s sins, too. Hard to say.
I am so excited to seeing Mel back on the big screen,it’s been much too long. Good to hear he went to rehab. I am a recovering alcoholic and he’s just going to have to remember One Step at A Time. I am so proud of him and can’t wait to see his new movie, and hope to seee more to come.
God Bless you Mel. Go for the the Gusto!!!! Hope to see him on talk shows promoting his new flick.
Especially 20/20 and Ellen DeGeneres she would be a perfect host for him.
