When the Matrix came out, I remembered Dark City and some of the imagery is similar. The audience just wasn't ready for that sort of thing yet, but I think it paved the way for other Sci Fi's to take on those kind of mind twisting ideas. I think that was why the box office wasn't as large and not very many people saw Dark City when it came out. I really liked it though and went to the theater 3 times to see it in college. If you haven't seen it, it is worth viewing. If you like the Matrix you will probably like this movie too.
