Okay, this post will probably make our loyal readers laugh. A lot. But whatever.
I’ve included you thus far in my high-definition DVD journey, so I may as well keep it going.
The deal is this: I’m having a kid in about eight months and my life is going to drastically change, especially in the financial department. After December 4th-ish, the chances of me buying a Blu-Ray player are slim to none.
Now is the time.
I got my $50 credit from Amazon.com for my ridiculous HD-DVD purchase back in December, so I want to put that to good use.
Also, what better way to spend my Federal Tax relief money that’s coming next month?
So now I need to know what Blu-Ray player I should get. Amazon has quite a few, but I’m just unsure which is going to be the best choice. I figure some of you already have a player and can tell me the right way to go.
I’m hoping to find one around $300-400, which will then be a bit lower with that $50 credit.
So help a brother out!

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL………….. {picks self up off of floor… has a couple of more chuckles…} Whew!! man, couldnt breathe there for a second.
Get a pen… I’ll wait…
Done yet? … ok…
You want to get a PS3. Why do you ask? Well mainly you need a Blu-Ray player that has a Firmware profile of 2.0 or later…. to save explanation of firmware, read this…
http://2aday.wordpress.com/2008/03/01/should-i-buy-a-blu-ray-dvd-player-now-okay-how-about-now/
PS3’s is the ONLY current Blu-ray on the market now that has this feature and is 2.0 compliant. AND you will be able to play games (that Jr. is going to want to play later…)
Listen to the Cap’n…if you are buying now, get a PS3…
See, I remember you saying that and I wanted to make sure that was the smart thing to do. The 2.0 firmware is a good argument for it as well.
My problem is, I sold the 360 because I never played it…
And by the time my kid is old enough to play it, wont there be like Playstation 10???
Either PS3 or a 2.0 profile player! If you don’t get a 2.0 profile player, then get one that has an ethernet connection to the internet so that you can update to 2.0 in the future (hopefully the brand you buy will allow you to do this).
I bought the Panasonic DMP-BD30K player (profile 1.1). It does not have the internet port (I upgrade my firmware via disc), so I can’t get 2.0 on mine. However, it is a super-solid player and I love it.

Well, possibly a PS10, but its a good piece of equipment that should last you a good number of years for sure. and that means Jr. could also play some kids aeducational games on it as well as he/she gets old enuogh to try it.
And , it will have some games you will want to play, its a good activity when you monitor it, that you can play with with the family. Its 2 products in one, and the only one with current complatible firmware. I dont blame you for not playing your X-box, those games blow =) , on PS3 you can buy NBA game and re-enact Duncan attemtping that 3 pointer again to see if he can hit it again… PS3 my friend…
Is the PS3 player any good? I know when the 360 had their HD-DVD add-on, it was noisy, or at least, the 360 itself was noisy…
If I re-enacted Duncan shooting that three, I’d also add Brian Skinner running at him with a bayonet.
Youre asking if the PS3 is noisy because youre X-box 360 was noisy and probably ready to give you the red light of death notice on your hard drive?
let me help you here…
Microsfot backed a lost technology HD-DVD, and they want to rule the world pretty. the day bill gates can explain to me why his powerpoint application redraws lines on my presentation slide that i didnt tell it to do when making a text change, then I’ll promote his x-box, otherwise, I’d take the worldly popular, getting in the mix PS3 game making blu-ray playing machine!!!
P.S Stoopid Spurs…
Cap’n Schwartz is right.
Get the 40GB version of the PS3 like I did. It’s silent too. You will save $50. But you will need the remote($25 at Walmart for the true PS3 remote not the fake at $20) unless you don’t mind using the controller.
A part from the game, it starting to be a good multimedia machine(DivX, Xvid, WMV, MP3…). Sony talk about a 10 year life cycle for it. Yes, a PS4-5 will exist by then. But jr will be able to play games and they will be cheaper too.
Half-Life 2 in the $5 bin

My boss still uses his PS2 as his DVD player! He bought it when DVDs became the norm.
I plan to get a PS3 with my tax rebate, with full awareness that I’m unlikely to get any games for a long while since I have a 360. But, 5 years down the line, who knows? The PS3 will still cost the same (more or less) and hold it’s value (more or less), but if you buy a stand alone Blu-Ray Player, in 5 years they’re probably going to be worth $50.
My opinion, anyway.
Olbinski you kill me with your HD-DVD debacle. I know exactly what you mean though about spending for yourself before the kid gets here. I somehow convinced Tracy to sign off on me buying a snowmobile. I am pretty sure I got the OK when she was not feeling well and was sleep deprived and therefore, borderline incoherent. Either way, it worked.
So with that, happy hunting in the Blu-Ray department.
I think you should buy baby furniture instead… just an idea.
What baby? huh?
Doh! So much for the Blu-ray player now… the pants have spoken!
Not just baby furniture, but diapers, and toys, diapers, and books, and diapers…
Not entirely true, they dont have to buy diapers, they can just use Mo’s…
Ouch
Well – if you would use ones with adhesive strips instead of safety pins, you could avoid those “ouch” moments…

Agree with Ape, velcro has been around for a while Mo, heck its how you keep your shoes on since shoe-laces were a difficult time for you…
Now they have ones with stretchy waistbands for babies “on the go.”
