Nothing spectactular comes out this week, although Amazon does have some sweet deals on various TV shows on DVD.
There’s actually only one movie I’d fee comfortable recommending this week, so all-in-all, it’s a yawner of a Tuesday.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
This movie has an 8.2 rating on IMDB, and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, won two Golden Globes and had a total of 35 wins in various festivals and award shows.
Elle France editor Jean-Dominique Bauby, who, in 1995 at the age of 43, suffered a stroke that paralyzed his entire body, except his left eye. Using that eye to blink out his memoir, Bauby eloquently described the aspects of his interior world, from the psychological torment of being trapped inside his body to his imagined stories from lands he’d only visited in his mind.
I really want to see this one, I heard it’s unbelievably magical and inspiring. Can you imagine “blinking” out your memoirs? (buy)
Various TV shows
Amazon has some pretty amazing deals going if you want to order your favorite series on TV.
- Lost – Seasons 1-3: Only $99 when it would normally run $179 . Yikes. But not in Blu-Ray.
- Scrubs – Seasons 1-6: $149 instead of $249. Smoking.
- Grey’s Anatomy – Seasons 1-3: $79 versus $149.
Cheers: The Complete Ninth Season comes out as well.
You can see more releases over on Amazon.com.
Blu-Ray Releases
- 27 Dresses (Fox)
- First Knight (Sony)
- The Golden Compass (New Line)
- Motley Crue: Carnival of Sins (Warner Music Group)
- Mozart: Die Zauberflote (Opus Arte)
- Ocean’s Eleven (Warner)
- Ocean’s Twelve (Warner)

Nothing spectacular this week on regular DVD or Blu. Looking at the Blu-ray release schedule, it looks like it will be awhile before I’m buying anything new.
We did just watch Ghost Rider on Blu a couple of nights ago – ugh, terrible movie. We have No Country for Old Men coming now from NetFlix – I’m hoping that lives up to all the hype.

Im surprised you didnt recommend or talk about the Golden Compass that is out this week. Although I haven’t seen it, it earned a small mint, and was supposedly pretty good. Did anyone see it?? Is it worth a rent?
I purposefully passed on that movie…

It wasnt due to it being supposedly anti-religious was it?
It was. Now, that does not mean that I will never watch it, but I won’t pay to watch it.

I heard the Golden Compass wasn’t that great actually, so I skipped it.
Well… there you have it…
Cap’n – how about Lost Seasons 1-3 on DVD! Now you can catch up.
Cap’n – There’s always abc.com as another option. They have every episode in streaming HD.
@Jina, true, Mrs capn and I are scheduled to try to tackle the series as long as the DVds aren’t Lost… (like that tie in?)
@Kory, good point, HD is always a great option… I’ll probably do the DVD’s since I’ll have a watcher with me, but its a good back up to have, thanks for the option
I somehow feel behind the times with no HDTV, Blue-Ray, DVR… I’m sad.
Gee, I dunno Jason, I’m not hearing any mothers day gifts listed here at all… but thats just me, I have a hard time reading…
@ Cap’n: You picked up that I was hinting for a Mother’s Day present? From THAT? No, no..>Makenzie is enough present for me.
Well its the process of elimination… blu-ray is useless without an HDTV, as is a DVR… I would pick out a nice juicy frosty shiny HDTV!!!
Especially with Summer approaching – it will keep you cool.

How would your standard definition LotR discs look any better?
I like my TV, I didn’t say it was the best, but I’d recommend a Sony LCD to anyone.
Because it’s on the West Side – duh…
