Wow.
Okay, this episode was so deep and involved so many things from the past, that I was almost afraid to try and recap it and not do the thing justice.
That feeling lasted for like 5 seconds.
I’m not going to do a complete play-by-play recap this week, because it would likely take forever. Instead, we’ll just cover the main highlights. Which is still A LOT.
But first: “He wants us to move the Island.”
OMG.
We’ll get back to that and a HUGE coincidence that I discovered in chasing down reminders on who Horace was. I’m sure I’m wrong, but I’m pointing it out.
Let’s get the side stuff out of the way.
The Freighter
The helicopter returns, bringing the injured mercenaries with it. Kemy confronts the captain, blaming him for giving his name to Benjamin Linus. But no, it’s Michael the captain points out, so they go down to see him and Kemy tries to blow him away.
Not gonna happen. The Island apparently STILL wants Michael alive. The gun jams twice, and Kemy makes the captain go fix it.
Now Kemy sort of takes over the ship in a way, yanks a key off the captain and opens up a box containing a document from Mr. Widmore. It has a Dharma logo and apparently tells them where Ben is headed.
“If Ben knows that the Island is going to get torched, there is only one place he can go.”
Underground? Hmmmmm….perhaps.
As Kemy packs up munitions in the helicopter to head back, the Captain doesn’t like it. He gives Sayid and Desmond a motor boat to get back to the Island to try and get people off before Kemy gets back. But Desmond wont go with Sayid, saying he can’t go back after being there 3 years. Sayid goes out alone.
As they get ready to leave, the time travel element enters the picture once more. Even though back on the Island, the dead doctor washed up to shore two episodes ago (while Kemy and his men were still on the Island fighting smokey) he’s totally fine on the boat. He’s still alive.
On the freighter after they return, one of the soldiers gets a morse code phone call.
No wonder they replied saying the “the doctor is fine.” He WAS fine.
Not only is the Island now operating in the future, but it’s like WAY ahead now. Earlier this season, with that missile launched from the boat, it was only 30 minutes or so.
Confusing? Yes.
But as Frank is trying to make a stand and NOT fly the soldiers back, Kemy slices the doctor’s throat and tosses him overboard. Time fulfills itself.
Interesting that the dead body floated perfectly to the Island, while others have to try hard to maintain the correct course of 305 degrees.
John’s Backstory
Emily…Emily…Emily…the poor young girl gets pregnant, hit by a car and gives birth to a miracle baby 3 months premature.
John Locke is born. And while he’s gaining enough health to be able to go home, someone is watching.
Richard Alpert. From Mittelos. Lost Time. Sort of like how Richard apparently has lost all concept of time since he never friggin’ ages.
Richard thinks baby Locke is special. After Locke grows up a bit, maybe 4-5 years old, Richard comes to test him to see if he’s ready for a school in Portland. Called Mittelos.
He lays all these objects in front of John: A knife, comic book, baseball glove, compass, a book and what appears to be a vial of sand.
Richard asks John: “Tell me John…which of these things belong to you…already.”
John chooses the knife, but it’s the wrong one. Richard grabs them all and storms out.
Maybe I missed the one that does belong to him. Did anyone catch it?
I think John knew which one it was.
Later Locke is trying to rehab from his spinal injury. As he finishes a session, a black man helps him into a wheelchair to take him back to his room.
Matthew Abaddon. The man who visited Hurley in the asylum in a flash-forward. The man who puts Naomi’s team together that are now known as the freighter people.
He tells Locke that he needs to go on a “walk about“…from season one (I believe). He says Locke falling two stories and not dying was a miracle. The walk about is a journey of self-discovery.
Abaddon went on his own walk-about. And before John leaves up the elevator, Matthew adds this tidbit:
“When you are ready Mr. Locke, you’ll listen to what I’m saying. And then…when you and me run into each other again…you’ll owe me one.”
Wow. So who is this Abaddon guy? First he assembles the team to go storm the Island, next he’s visiting Hurley later, and now it seems like he’s a good guy trying to help Locke.
How does he fit in the puzzle?
John, Ben and Hurley and…the Emilys?
As John, Ben and Hurley try to find the cabin, Locke has a dream about Horace. Apparently he was the one who built the cabin.
If you don’t remember him, I’ll remind you (because I needed a reminder as well). He was the guy who tried to help Benjamin’s parents deliver him. His mother died during the birth, but Ben lived of course. Horace told Ben’s father, Roger, about the Dharma Initiative and was the one who basically brought them to the Island.
Now, before we go any further, I have to say…in reading up on Horace, I discovered one interesting tidbit:
Ben’s mother’s name was Emily.
John’s mother’s name was Emily.
Coincidence? I highly doubt it, the Lost writers hardly ever screw up things like this. Everything is meant for a reason.
Edit: Below in the comments section, Adrian blew a hole in my “Ben and John have the same mother” story, but I still think it’s weird that they have the same name.
Okay, since this recap will never end, the search for the cabin ensues. Horace tells Locke to find “Horace” and that will point him to the cabin.
Locke visits the dead body pit where Ben shot him, and finds Horace’s boney corpse. A map to the cabin is inside a pocket, and so they head off. Hurley spots the cabin first, thus justifying his presence.
But Ben and Hurley both stay outside while John goes in. Yikes. Scary cabin.
A man is sitting at the table, and it’s Christian Shephard of course. We’ve already seen his white sneakers earlier in the season. But we didn’t expect Claire to be SITTING IN THERE WITH HIM!
Creeeeeepy!
Christian speaks for Jacob he says, which is exactly what I have been suspecting for awhile now. I never thought Christian WAS Jacob. He’s just a vessel.
But what is Claire doing there? The baby is “away from here” says Christian, “where it should be.”
We don’t find out anything about Claire, because there is no time Christian says. The men are returning and will kill everyone. John…ask the question you need to ask.
“How do I save the ISLAND?”
My wife made an interesting point that he didn’t ask how to save the PEOPLE. No, he only cares about the ISLAND.
Hurley and Ben share a candybar outside when Locke returns. They look at him, ask him if he got an answer, and he says yes.
“He wants us to MOVE the Island.”
Woooooooooooh…move the frakking Island?!?!?!?!
I love it! No idea what it means…but it really starts to help shape the idea we have of the place. That it’s not always in one place, that perhaps it CAN be moved, thus making it so hard to find.
And is it too late? The helicopter is already back over the Island. It passed over the beach camp and Frank secretly dropped a package out the door, with a satellite phone that was tracking the chopper. Jack thinks it means they want them to follow the chopper.
Questions and Stuff
Geronimo Jackson was a band poster inside teenaged John Locke’s locker at school. There is a bit of other info about it if interested over on the Lost Wiki site.
What does Kemy have on his arm? It seems like some kind of biological sensor that could set off some bomb if Kemy were to die. But what is it connected to? The boat?
Do you think the two mom’s named Emily is just a coincidence?
Hurley dreaming about malamars was hilarious.
So what is up with Richard? Does he time travel, and thus can take an item of Locke’s from the future to test the young version of him with?
Ben mentioned that it wasn’t HIM who ordered the death of all the Dharma people. In fact, he wasn’t the leader at that time. Who was?
Locke is now apparently the leader. Ben’s time has passed.

Richard is the key. HE was the leader of the Others when they took out the Dharma Initiative. HE’s the one that does ALL the recruiting on the island, whether it’s John Locke as a 5 year old or Juliet. HE is the leader of the Others at the mysterious Temple–which I have a feeling is where John, Hurley and Ben will end up.
As for the choosing, I think it could have been either the vial of sand, the compass or the Book of Laws. The sand could represent the island, which Jacob has apparently made to be Locke’s now. It could be the compass just because of who he is. And the only reason I mention the book was because it was the only item besides the other two and the knife that the camera lingered on. Flimsy reasoning, but there it is.
NO IDEA about Claire. I’m baffled.
Good to see Sayid and Des again. Looks like Des will have more to do next week. About time.
Awesome episode that was FULL of stuff to wrap our heads around. I thought the weirdest part, though, was Claire sitting in the corner of the cabin looking like she was high or something. Just strange.
Amazing episode for so many reasons!
Adams last blog post.."Talk sense to a fool and he’ll call you foolish."
Holy Cow – that was an awesome episode last night – just incredible. Loved it.
In the clip from last week with Horace, Tracy recognized him. I was not sure, but turns out she called it correctly.
All in all, great episode. Claire in the cabin is a trip. Loved the fact that ben and hurly shared a candy bar.
Next week should shape up to be another intense show.
oh yeah, favorite quote of the night was when ben said, “Cause John, destiny is a fickle bitch.”
No one has any thoughts about the two Emily’s???
Am I nuts?
@ Mike – your nuts, but that is besides the point…
When Hurley broke out with the candy bar and gave Benry half, I said outload, “Not going anywhere for awhile…” – made the wife laugh.
i can’t decide on the two emily’s, but i am leaning towards there being a connection since ben was the chosen one and now locke is getting the call from jacob.
@ Ape – ROTFL!
The Claire scene was just odd. I’m also thinking that the 2 Emilys are NOT a coincidence. But why is Emily so special, i have no clue. Perhaps it would help to know who Emily’s father is. And I want to know WHO exactly Matthew Abaddon is or what he does. The fact that John will “owe him one” tells me that Abaddon is more powerful than what we may have assumed.
Nevermind about the Emilys. There are 2 different Emilys. I forgot that Locke’s mom met Locke about 10 years before the crash to take part in Anthony Cooper’s scheme to get John’s kidney. Obviously Ben’s mother Emily was already dead and clearly a different actress. Here is a link about John Locke’s mom
Adrian, i thought about that too, but wasn’t that all a scheme to get John’s kidney? It wasn’t even his mom?
But i’ll read the link first
Ugh Adrian, I even looked that up and figured she was just part of the con, I can’t remember that far back on these things
Abaddon is the name of the angel of the abyss in the book of Revelations if that means anything. Richard and Abaddon have that penetrating look in their eyes, maybe its a coincidence but theyy both are timeless more or less.
Regarding the two Emilys, Ben’s mom died when he was born and Lockes mom is still alive. I think Ben and Locke are similar but not related.

Found an interesting theory on Lostpedia, one that actually makes sense to me.
“Locke becoming the leader/caretaker of the Island was foreshadowed with Eko’s last words to him, “You’re next.” At the time this seemed to mean Locke was the next to die but obviously that’s not what happened. Eko was a potential leader/caretaker but when he failed to recognize Yemi as being a conduit for Jacob (“You speak to me as if I were your brother.”) then Jacob had no use for Eko and thus killed him and Locke was picked as the next one Jacob would try to contact.”
I miss Eko
@ Mike – Did you happen to take a look at the comic book Richard put on the table? It was titled Mystery Tales. My buddy just pointed out that it says “Hidden land” and has a picture of two skylines.
@ Adrian – I remember that but had forgotten it. I miss Ecko as well. He was one of my favorite characters.
Nice catch with Eko – wow.
@ Kory – I picked up on that right away. I kept looking at everything he was bringing out and analyzing what connection or reference it was making to the island. I paused the TV on the comic book – crazy stuff. The writers are absolutely brilliant on this show – no doubt about it.

@ Adrian – nice, forgot all about that.
@ Kory, Ape – I didn’t go back and look at the cover of the comic book, but that’s really interesting stuff.
I miss Ecko too.
i still want to know why Hurley tells Jack that he shouldn’t have gone with Locke. i guess we’ll find out soon!
and gee, Locke’s dad was a creep even at his conception. nasty old man!
it’s also interesting that Widmore apparently gave the Captain different directions than Remy. Remy has serious anger issues, huh?! i can’t stand the way he talks either!
nickys last blog post..Temporary Hiatus.
and i meant Kemy obviously. i have no idea where Remy came from….my brain has been very scattered lately!
nickys last blog post..Temporary Hiatus.
It’s actually Keamy, and I’ve apparently been spelling it wrong
I swear I saw it on Lost Pedia as Kemy awhile back. Blah.
I think the island is able to change events in both the past and the future. It has co-evolved with its inhabitants over the ages to form a symbiotic organism; the island is both rock and life (similar to Dr. Who’s “Tardis” or a Timelord Gaia of sorts).
If you threaten the island or its inhabitants, the island can go back into your past and do something to disrupt your time line, say, send a different man to meet your mother — edging your father out of the picture. The island and its agents can even continue to visit you and alter your timelines . . . It is limited though in that personal intervention is required. It is not exactly omnipotent . . .
The island is even able to respond to a threat by perhaps going wwaaayyyyy back in history and rerouting the magma flows that initially created the island — effectively “moving the island”.
This also means that it is pointless to ask what time it is on the island. It is everytime on the island. The island can react in any time — changing any moment in a round-about-way……
Greg
oops -editing error
Greg, interesting point…sort of like how at the end of last season, Ben kept saying “You weren’t supposed to do this Jack.”
I don’t know. I’m starting to lean towards a repeated timeline type scenario where everything has happened before and certain people are privy to that information and are trying to change little things in the timeline to cause some bigger change.
It makes sense when you think about people saying how they “weren’t supposed to leave the island” or Ben saying that Jack wasn’t supposed to do something. The rules that Ben spoke about between him and Widmore could be agreed upon because breaking those rules would change the timeline too much.
In last night’s episode we could have seen an example of this knowledge being used in the information that was in the safe. Keamy said it was information on where Ben would be – information Widmore could have had if he was privy to the first timeline somehow…
That’s all I’ve got right now.
A couple of minor annoyances with this episode.
The Buddy Holly song, Everyday, wasn’t the original song but a cover version. Guess they couldn’t get the original performance license. Also the song is an anachronism since it was released on Sept 20, 1957, not 1956. Holly and Norman Petty hadn’t even written the song by John Locke’s supposed birthday of May 30th, 1956.
Keamy is supposed to be a Marine yet he referred to his handgun as a ‘gun’, not ‘weapon’ or ‘handgun’. (This is my weapon, this is my gun. This is for fighting, this is for fun.) Then, killing the only medical support for him and his men before going on a high threat mission is pretty damn stupid too. I guess his mission is intended as a suicide mission. This, and having him make First Sergeant within 4 years of being in the Corps as mentioned in a previous episode, makes me even more annoyed with the writers when it comes to military and Marines stuff.
Other than that, this was a great episode. My guess, Widmore ordered the murder of the Dharma personnel.

Richard’s items-
When the young Locke picked the sand, there was no change in Richard’s expressions. The same with the compass. But when he started looking at the “Book of Laws”, he had this happy expression in his eyes and on his face, as if he was saying “Yes, that’s it, pick it up”. But once he switched his eyes to the Knife and Comic Book, he was shocked and disappointed. I think he was supposed to pick either the Sand (From the Island) or the book.. The book that states the “rules” Ben has been mentioning in previous episodes.
I also find it weird that the Island doesn’t want Michael dead yet.. He is the only one able to fix the boat. Without him, the Losties wouldn’t be able to get home, at least not through the boat.
Ben is losing his faith and doubting the Island’s power. Anyone thinks it’s a coincidence that Ben got sick a couple of days before Oceanic 815 crashed on the Island? Or was the Island setting things in motion…? Get Ben sick, he’ll want someone to fix him. Oh wow look, a spinal surgeon on the flight, Ben will try to save himself and grab the doctor to fix him. These events will lead Locke to the Cabin, and his commetment will be tested. John has been shown signs no one else have seen from his first day on the Island. Signs strong enough to make him realize that this place is special from day 1.
But why is Hurley special and can see the Cabin? What about Claire? I believe she and Jack are on the same level of faith. They both aren’t supersticious and believe in nothing such as fate, god or the Island.
(Here is a script from Exodus [Season 1 Finale])
/quote
SUN: Do you think all this … all we’ve been through … do you think we’re being punished?
SHANNON: Punished for what?
SUN: Things we did before. The secrets we kept. The lies we told.
SHANNON: Who do you think is punishing us?
SUN: Fate.
CLAIRE: No one’s punishing us.
(They both turn to look at Claire, who stares off in front of her.)
CLAIRE: There’s no such thing as fate.
/End of quote
What’s with the sudden change of the ship’s captain? When Desmond and Saiyd first got on the freighter, he was behaving EXACTLY like Keamy is right now. Even Lapidus was so scared of him and telling Saiyd and Desmond they don’t want to talk to him or meet him. Yet now he is very eager to help Saiyd and Desmond. Suddenly all kind and helpful… Weird.
And the time difference between the outside world and the Island is getting crazy by the minute O_o Why do I think it is crazy? Well for one… The helicopter took off at night, and reached the Island at night. The doctor was killed before the helipcopter took off by 2 minutes, and the body reached the Island 2 days or so before the helicopter? However when Saiyd and Desmond took off from the Island, going to the freighter, how long did it take them to get there?
I recognized Abaddon from the moment he grabbed the Wheelchair. That bald head is very unique xD Richard knew Locke was unique since he was a child, but how? How did Abaddon know Locke was unique though? He was talking to Locke as if he knew John was going to end up on the Island, and he’d survive. Yet when he was talking to Naomi, he kept saying that every single one who was on Oceanic 815 is dead.. Now, another question bugging me. Abaddon works for Widmore obviously (Since he put the team together, and the freighter belongs to Widmore).. Why didn’t Abaddon or other people working for Widmore board Oceanic 815?
Apparently, Claire was told a LOT of things by Christian that made her in this state.. Everyone knows how INSANE Claire without Aaron. But to be so CALM at the Cabin and not giving a flying c*** about Aaron? That’s one of the things I didn’t expect to see ever. I thought the only reason Kate had Aaron was because Claire is dead X_x
Ohhh boy.. It’s getting better and worse. Better because of how insane it’s getting, and worse because we are getting close to the season’s finale. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh life will be so hard without Lost all these months ;________;
On a side note, I’ve been waiting for a season 4 Locke centric since season 3 finale. I wanted Locke’s flash forward, to see what becomes of him. Anyone noticed that we didn’t get a single Locke flashforward x_x ?
Yeah, I’d been waiting for a Locke episode as well, but as far as the flash-forwards, he wasn’t an Oceanic 6 member, and I’m pretty sure there have been no flash-forwards for anyone other than the 6 (other than Ben, etc).
@MadFan – Dead men have no flash-forwards.

would you please tell me the name of the song at the beginning of “cabin fever” episode. the song that emily listens. it’s great and I don’t know the song and singer and can’t find. thanks in advance
I bored out of it when i watched it until chapter 34 ..
