Variety recently reported that Buck Rogers is being redeveloped for a big screen adaptation. Nu Image/Millennium Films has acquired film rights to Buck Rogers, and will develop a live action screen version of the venerable pilot who awakens in the 25th Century and battles evil.
Nu Image/Millennium plans to shop the property to find a studio partner as they did with Conan recently. Some reports have said that the reported budget for the film will be in the $40M range. If this is the case then we shouldn’t expect much from the film.
For those of you who don’t know, Buck Rogers was created in 1928 by Philip Nowlan. Rogers is a pilot/astronaut who falls into a coma and doesn’t awaken until the 25th Century. The character became well known in a long running syndicated newspaper comic strip. He also appeared in a 12 part 1939 movie serial, a 1979 television series starring Gil Gerard (which you can watch on Hulu), and in many other incarnations. The development of space technology actually helped launch Buck Rogers into American pop culture
I think the idea of turning Buck Rogers into a movie is silly. I think they should get the team together who re-imagined Battlestar Galactica and see what they can come up with for some new ideas for Buck Rogers. Lose all the campiness of the 1980′s NBC series and turn it into a more serious show. It could actually be pretty cool.

used to watch Buck Rogers as a kid, but have no desire to see it as a movie. However, I agree with Jason. If you are going to do it, put a new spin on it like BSG.

Wasn’t the late 70s pilot for Buck Rogers actually released as a theatrical film? I seem to recall something about that.
This was a fun show when I was a kid, but I can’t see why it needs to be a movie.

I never saw the show…only the little cartoons on Looney Toons where Bugs was Buck Rodgers of the 25 and a half century!
