I hadn’t heard a single thing until The Movie Blog discovered it, but there is a new film due out in October called City of Ember, based off the book of the same title.
The plot seems interesting, but I am wondering if it’s more of a kids movie with the two teenage central characters.
Here is the official synopsis, from Cinematical:
For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights – underground. But Ember’s once powerful generator is failing . . . and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker. Now, two teenagers in a race against time, must search Ember for clues that will unlock the ancient mystery of the city’s existence, and help the citizens escape before the lights go out forever.
The cast is pretty good: Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan (Atonement), Tim Robbins, Martin Landau, Toby Jones and Harry Treadaway. It’s produced by Tom Hanks himself, and directed by Gil Kenan who did Monster House (which I totally loved).
The film opens on October 10th, but the trailer supposedly debuts this weekend on Prince Caspian.
Here are a few images from the movies, followed by the official poster.

I’m so excited about this! I have read the first two books in the series and I have the third, but have not read it. My fifth graders love this book too. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Although the main characters are kids, it is a great story. If you want to read it, let me know, I have 6 copies at school.
Glad you know the story Deb, that’s cool.
What level is it on? I mean, is this Harry Potter type reading, or younger?
I’ve been hearing good things about this too. Sounds interesting.
