So I’m just going nuts with comic books lately, having just finished Public Enemies and also ordering two more Y: The Last Man (#3 and #4), along with Superman/Batman Volume 2.
But the fun doesn’t end there. First off, this Wednesday gives us the third and final installment of Serenity: Better Days Ahead, which first debuted back in March. I’ve loved both issues so far and can’t wait to pick up the conclusion.
On the Firefly front, there is also a little tidbit about a new story coming out soon called A Shepherd’s Tale, which is going to tell the backstory of Shepherd Book. I for one AM STOKED to find out what the deal is with him, as his past has always been one of the biggest mysteries of the Firefly universe.
Here are a few spoilers about the new series (highlight the blank space below to see them).
- Joss will be co-authoring a comic titled A Shepherd’s Tale
- Book found God in a bowl of soup
- A part of Book (not the hair!) is artificial
- Book is best known for his biggest failure
- He took the name Derrial from the man he killed
The second comic this week that I’m somewhat excited about is a brand new series written by Grant Morrison called Batman #676: R.I.P.
Here is the official plot from DC Comics:
Written by Grant Morrison; Art and variant cover by Tony Daniel and Sandu Florea; Cover by Alex Ross
Are you ready for “Batman R.I.P.”?
Beginning the epic story that will change the legend of the Dark Knight forever! Everything in Grant Morrison’s groundbreaking run on Batman has been leading to this story, and nothing will ever be the same again.
Who will live? Who will die? Who will be Batman? The answers are sure to shock you in “Batman R.I.P.,” featuring artwork by Tony Daniel and Sandu Florea and covers by Alex Ross.
I’ve read nothing but great things about Morrison as a writer, so this could be the start of an awesome series. You can read more about it at Wikipedia, but it seems I’m about 20 issues behind in the comics by Morrison that lead up to R.I.P.
Likely I’ll grab this one on Wednesday and then see about finding the older ones to catch up.
The covers for Batman R.I.P. are pretty sweet, and I have four of them below for you all to see. Click on them for the gigantic versions. The first issue is on the left.
The release schedule from DC Comics looks like this:
- #676 – May 14th
- #677 – May 28th
- #678 – June 25th
- #679 – July 23rd

I’m really looking forward to the new Batman arc. I’ve been impressed with Morrison so far.

Me too man, can’t wait to go pick ‘em up tomorrow.
I am a debbie downer here, I liked some of morrisons work on JLA, X-men with Xorn and all, but I don’t know it lacked something. I like Rucka and Brubaker’s work with batman better.

After re-watching Firefly on Hulu I’m even more disappointed that this series never got traction. Great characters, great action, great setting.
