I just can’t get excited about The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the third addition to the Mummy franchise. The poster looks cool and the preview is jam packed with action and special effects, but there’s just something off. I think that if Rachel Weisz had returned as the wife/mother/female lead and if the kid in the last movie wasn’t like 19 years old now, and if skipping all those years made any sense then I might would have this film on my list of movies that I wanted to see this summer. As it stands, however, I just can’t get excited about it.
Still, the preview is actually pretty good.
The blockbuster global franchise takes a spellbinding turn as the action shifts to Asia for the next chapter in the adventure series, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.” Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O’Connell to combat the resurrected Han Emperor (Jet Li) in an epic that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Rick is joined in this all-new adventure by son Alex (newcomer Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) and her brother, Jonathan (John Hannah). And this time, the O’Connells must stop a mummy awoken from a 2,000-year-old curse who threatens to plunge the world into his merciless, unending service. Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation, China’s ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have laid forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. But when dashing adventurer Alex O’Connell is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents. As the monarch roars back to life, our heroes find his quest for world domination has only intensified over the millennia.
I think the poster for the film is pretty good too – a little darker than I would have expected from this film series.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor opens in theaters on August 1, 2008.
As I said no Rachel Weisz means wait for cable when nothing else worth watching is on. I also liked the Ardeth Bay character as well and that character doesn’t seem to be in this movie either.

I’ll put it in my queue. The poster looks cool though.
I am sad Rachel Weisz decided not to be in the third film. Wasn’t the first Mummy movie the one that made her famous in the first place? It seems a bit dis-loyal to the fans to just not be in the thrid sequal, no matter how silly the ideas.
Secondly, I don’t really like the huge time jump from the last movie to this one. I didn’t really like the time jump from the first movie to the second one either, but I watched the film anyway. I really did like the first film, but I thought the second one could have been done better or not at all. The Mummy might have been better to just stand alone, but you know, today if something is popular, then they have to make sequels to make more money. The same philosophy goes with the Matrix and Pirates of the Caribbean; they should have just remained as they were originally intended, as stand alone movies. There is always something kind of off with a sequel to a film that was originally written to be a complete story. It is rare when you can see it successfully done. Can anyone think of a sequel that was NOT intended from the beginning to be written? For example, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, movies do not count because they were always intended to have sequels after the oringal film.

Point Break?
Pirates of the Caribbean was intended to have sequels…
“Curse of the Black Pearl” was written to be a stand alone movie, because they were not sure how it would be received. At the same time they were making “The Haunted Mansion” movie as well, and the same kind of thinking was that if the first movie took off, they might add sequels. Disney wanted to do these two “ride” themed movies at the same time. I thought it was an interesting idea to base a movie on a theme ride. Well, the Haunted Mansion movie bombed and Pirates was a success. The writers have said they had a hard time coming up with the story for the Pirates sequel because they were under so much stress from the Studio to write it quickly so they could get to filming it. What I am pointing out is the story for the sequels was not originally planned when they did the story for the first film. They didn’t write the “next part of the story” until the first movie was a success and I don’t think they had time to really develop the screen play enough.
