This is some seriously exciting news for all of us Sports Night fans out there who may or may not consider it one of their favorite shows of all time.
It certainly ranks in my Top 3. I’ve watched the series through so many times I’ve lost count. Being a half-hour comedy-drama, it’s easy to rip through the two seasons it lasted.
It was sadly canceled before it should have been, just when it was hitting its stride, but that’s the way things go when a show is extremely well-done, but just not popular enough to bring in the ratings. Just ask the team from Arrested Development.
We can find solace though in the fact that the two seasons combined start and finish a great story, ending with a high note and a finale that brings tears to my eyes everytime.
The cast is brilliant. Peter Krause, Felicity Huffman, Joshua Malina, Josh Charles, etc. Created and written by Aaron Sorkin, this was the show right before his amazing West Wing.
I’m telling you, it’s a fantastic series.
On September 30th of this year, it will be the 10th anniversary of the series premiere on ABC, and on that same day a brand new DVD set will be released.
Coming from Shout! Factory, get ready for the 10th Anniversary Edition of Sports Night, complete with all kinds of new stuff, including two bonus discs filled with special features.
From the official release:
Offering the first comprehensive Sports Night experience ever, the 8-DVD collector’s box set contains all 45 acclaimed episodes, a special 10th Anniversary book, and 2 full discs of exclusive bonus features that reveal the genesis, life and afterlife of the series with all-new interviews, behind-the-scenes featurettes, gag reels, deleted scenes, and commentaries featuring the principal cast and creative team. You don’t have to know sports to enjoy Sports Night. The collectable 10th Anniversary Edition of Sport Night: The Complete Series DVD box set is priced to own at $69.99.
It’s hard to believe or even remember, that this show won a few Emmys and a Golden Globe, plus was nominated 22 times for various other award shows.
Here is the official description of the show for you newbies:
A show-within-a-show, the genre-breaking Sports Night merged the respective television drama and comedy classification, and gave rise to a unique hybrid TV series that is infused with rich characters, snappy repartee, dramatic moments, and kinetic multi-single-camera scenes that stretched the visual possibilities of the conventional sitcom. The first pairing of the now-legendary creative team of Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme (West Wing, Studio 60), Sports Night boasts a pedigreed ensemble cast including Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), Peter Krause (Dirty Sexy Money, Six Feet Under), Josh Charles (In Treatment), Robert Guillaume (Benson), Sabrina Lloyd (Numb3rs, Ed), Josh Malina (The West Wing) alongside recurring notable guest stars William H. Macy, Teri Polo, Brenda Strong and Ted McGinley, among others. This brilliant but short-lived Emmy®-winning show set the stage for an array of tongue-in-cheek send-ups of high-stress entertainment media industry themed shows seen on today’s television.
Stay tuned for the pre-order information, which I know you are ALL anxious to know. If there was a line to stand it to get the first copy, I’d be in it.
Below is the art for the DVD cover.

This is a great show! Not just for sports-lover at all. If you haven’t seen it, check it out!
I never saw this show, I liked Robert Guillome in Soap and Benson. It’s weird I am a big sports fan and enjoy thought out comedy but for some reason it doesn’t appeal to me.
BTW what are number 1 and 2?
Totally off subject but who has seen The Wire. Jason Whitlock claims its (or was) the best show.
DadofIandIs last blog post..Mr. Baseball
Like anything, you’d need to watch a few episodes to get into it. Once you do, you’ll be hooked I think.
Numbers 1 and 2…probably Arrested Development is #1. Second…well it would be Lost I think, even if it’s still going. If I had friends who had never seen these three shows, I might pick Lost for them to watch first.
Man, I miss this show. this was a true favorite for tracy and I. hard to believe it has been ten years since it first aired.
