Roland Emmerich just can’t get enough of big budget action films (Stargate, The Patriot), apocalyptic thrillers (Independence Day, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow), and movies named after numbers (Moon 44, 10,000 BC). Luckily, his latest project, 2012, will incorporate all of the above.
2012 starts off with a global cataclysm, which brings an end to the world as we know it, and chronicles the heroic struggle of the survivors. As you might imagine, if you’re prone to watching the History Channel as I am, the 2012 date in the title refers to the end days of human civilization as foretold by the ancient Mayan calendar.
Emmerich and Harald Kloser penned the screenplay, which Sony bought in February.
John Cusack, himself no slouch when it comes to movies named after numbers (Sixteen Candles, Eight Men Out, 1408) has signed on to star in the $200M budgeted summer tentpole picture. When’s the last time we heard John Cusack and summer tentpole picture mentioned in the same sentence? Oh yeah, Con Air back in 1997…
Redbelt star Chiwetel Ejiofor also is in talks to join the big-budget epic which hopes to start filming in July, barring an actor’s strike, for a July, 2009 release.
Wow…Cusack, Ejiofor…I love it.
Con Air rocked…but dang, $200 million??? *whistles*
Anything with Cusack is usually worth watching. Even ‘Must Love Dogs’ wasn’t bad for a chick flick.
Con Air was great, let’s hope with 200M, they can do even better, but the premise sounds promising.

Re 2012; I got this off the radio. End of the world; besides the Mayan connection, Nostradamus, the Bible Code, supposedly the peak of potable water will be reached then too. I am sure you can Wiki it or google it. Well at least I will be able to see the finale of Lost.

Let’s remember that the bad parts of Con Air were not John Cusack’s fault. Nicholas Cage didn’t realize that you don’t have to sound like a complete idiot to have a southern accent.
