There is blog done by a guy calling himself Darth Mojo, who works on the set of Battlestar Galactica and “essentially makes spaceships fly around and explode.” He’s worked on Babylon 5, Star Trek: Voyager and now BSG.
The most recent episode, Guess What’s Coming to Dinner, had a pretty awesome scene of a Basestar jumping right in the middle of the Colonial Fleet. It caused ships to have to veer off course, not to mention all the mayhem of a enemy appearing out of nowhere.
The image to the upper right was from his blog, and basically is a screen capture he did of a scene that never made it into the final edit of the episode, but was one he just fell in love with and could not let go lightly.
So he wrote about it and posted the video you see below can see on his site of the shot. This is what he said to introduce the clip:
I tackled the sequence where the Baseship jumps into the fleet, nearly getting blasted before our heroes realize it’s friendly. There’s one shot in particular which didn’t make the final cut that I absolutely had fallen in love with, so I’m going through the monumental effort of writing this entire piece and providing you with a deconstruction of the effects sequence just so it can finally be seen. How’s that for ego?
You should definitely visit Mojo’s blog to see the video and see how it was deconstructed. We had it posted here, but it was never intended to be a “embedable” media piece, so we removed it and are linking to his blog instead.
Pretty sweet, like all of their special effects.
Awesome find, Mike. Very cool reading Darth Mojo’s thoughts and description of the process.

Had to remove the video per the request of Darth Mojo, but go to his site to check it out!
