Guy Ritchie is on board to direct Sherlock Holmes for Warner Bros. and producers Lionel Wigram and Dan Lin.
Ritchie’s also working on a rewrite/polish of Tony Peckham’s script, based on Wigram’s upcoming comicbook “Sherlock Holmes.” The Studio is eying a 2010 release date.
The exact plot of the film is being kept under wraps, but execs at Warners have made no secret of their goal to reinvent Holmes and sidekick Dr. John H. Watson for a new generation. Wigram has previously mentioned to Variety that the new Holmes would be much more adventuresome and would take advantage of his skills as a boxer and swordsman (which he possessed in the books).
Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories about Holmes were written in the late 19th century. Doyle’s stories emphasized Holmes’ intellectual brilliance and deductive reasoning skills and the detective has mostly been portrayed as more of a pipe-smoking thinking man in the more than 200 films and TV shows in which he has appeared.
For those of you who don’t know, Guy Ritchie is the director who is married to Madonna and is best known for his work on films such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and Revolver. He is currently directing RocknRolla, for which he also wrote the screenplay, for Joel Silver’s Dark Castle Entertainment.
I wasn’t aware the Sherlock Holmes needed reinventing. I don’t know, maybe I’m already meandering down the path of being old fashioned, but what’s wrong with the old Sherlock?

In “Young Sherlock Homes” the movie, they did a very good job at re-inventing the story. I absolutely loved that movie. It ended so open, I always wanted a sequel, but time has passed far to long for that to happen. I wouldn’t mind seeing a re-invented Sherlock Homes, if it was done well. I liked LSATSB, so perhaps this could be a good thing.

I am looking forward to this big time, just because I friggin’ love Sherlock Holmes. I’ve read all the collected works of Doyle and just love the character.
I’d really get into them bringing him to a new generation, because I just don’t think any kids these days even know much about the character.
That is a good point Mike, we need Sherlock Homes to be brought to a new generation. I don’t think they even know who he is as a character. It’s so sad.

I think this could be great, a grittier more action oriented Holmes movie would be perfect for todays kids.
