    I thought the movie sounded really interesting so your review of the book just reinforces my opinion that I should probably read the book before seeing the movie.

    I did notice that the book has a prequel and a sequel. Could be interesting. I wonder if I should read the prequel first?

    Well, I heard from a friend that the first one is the best, the second is good and the third is the worst of the bunch.

    But I'd read them in order of publication, otherwise the City of Ember will likely be boring because you'll know the reason for everything.
