Finally we get a week with some OKAY releases, or at least some fun ones. We have a fantastic mini-series, a superhero-ish flick, a few cool Blu-Ray titles and two interesting TV series.
Alright, the weekend is coming fast, so let’s get to it.
John Adams (HBO)
I wrote a review after the first two episodes of John Adams when it premiered back in March and suffice it to say, I loved it. An HBO miniseries starring Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney, the 7-part production focused on the life of John Adams from his days as a lawyer before the American Revolution to his deathbed.
It’s a brilliant series with some amazing acting from Giamatti and Linney, along with a stellar supporting cast. A must-rent, a must-see. (Amazon)
Jumper
I’m not going to really recommend this movie as something worth seeing for the story and acting, but the idea behind it was fun and the special effects really, REALLY good. If you like good popcorn flicks and a nice superhero-ish movie with flashy teleporting, then you might dig it. And it probably looks great in the Blu-Ray version. (Amazon)
Home Improvement: The Complete Eighth Season
One of my favorite shows growing up, Home Improvement seemed like the ONE show on TV that you could watch with your parents without worrying about embarrassing topics coming up. It was good, clean, wholesome fun and I miss Tim “The Toolman” Taylor. (Amazon)
My Boys: The Complete First Season
This isn’t an amazing series or anything, but my wife really liked it and I have to admit, it is pretty good for what it tries to be. A twenty-something female sports writer for the Chicago Sun-Times whose only family is a bunch of guys and her brother, who all love to do the same things: Play poker, drink beer and talk about sports. What else could you ask for? (Amazon)
The Blu-Ray 12 Pack
Wow, are you kidding me? A random pack of 12 Blu-Ray movies? That’s a lot, for a big price.
For $162, you can get: Black Hawk Down, Casino Royale, The Fifth Element, Gattaca, Hellboy, House of Flying Daggers, A Knight’s Tale, Layer Cake, Spider-man, Talladega Nights and Underworld Evolution.

For those of you interested in checking out a solid summer sitcom – My Boys new season starts on Thursday night. Check out an episode and let me know. It's a cute show and definitely not just for girls.
You missed a couple of high profile flicks that I thought people might be interested in. The Bucket List and The Other Boleyn Girl both come out on DVD today. The Signal and Funny Games come out too for those who might be interested.
Didn't hear anything good about The Bucket List or Boleyn Girl. I guess Girl got a 41% on Rotten, not HORRIBLE, but it didn't look like anything I wanted to see.

I knew the bucket list was out, but I have it at the bottom of my list in a bucket….
True, but what you have to remember is that Rotten isn't exactly 100% accurate as far as how enjoyable a movie might be to a casual film watcher and these movies have only played in theaters where only a small fraction of people actually saw them.
I guarantee The Bucket List will be at the top of the rental charts this week (or maybe right below Jumper).
Jumper will probably end up in my NetFlix queue along with John Adams and The Bucket List. Other than that I don't think I'm really excited about anything else on this list. Maybe Be Kind, Rewind – did anyone here see that?

Being at the top of the rental charts does not mean it's a good movie
It's amazing when you go to the video store and see a movie completely out
of stock, and it's something like Norbit.

That's true, but often an audience for a film isn't really found UNTIL it's out on DVD. The type of people that will find “The Bucket List” an entertaining romp probably aren't the largest segment of our population to go to the movies. There's a good chance that there are plenty people who will think it was well worth the $4 rental even if it wasn't worth a $9 movie ticket.

You know, I saw it this weekend and it wasn't that bad. Maybe I'll do a review if I have time.
Also, the time from theater to DVD is a lot shorter than what it used to be and peoples home theater setups are much more affordable now, so you can come close to recreating the theater experience without the hassle of going. There are many movies that I am more willing to wait on now rather than going to the theater.
