According to Chud, Lawrence Kasdan has come aboard the live-action adaptation of Robotech project as screenwriter. Warner Brothers picked up rights to the “classic” cartoon last fall as a producing/starring project for Tobey Maguire.
If you don’t know, Lawrence Kasdan was the screenwriter for both The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark. He’s also done his share of directing so he knows what it takes to make a good screenplay. I think he’d be a magnificent choice to write just about anything so he’d definitely bring some class to this project.
For those of you like myself who never really watched Robotech I can tell you that Robotech refers to the scientific advances discovered in an alien starship that crashed on a South Pacific island. With this discovered technology, Earth developed giant robotic machines or mecha (many of which were capable of transforming into vehicles) to fight three successive extraterrestrial invasions. Robotech was actually really big there for a while when I was a kid.
What do you think? Are you interested in seeing a Robotech movie? Do you think Lawrence Kasdan will be able to turn it into a good film?
I'm easily down for this…. the tv cartoons were so -so , the later Robotech movies were simply awesome, they had a recent release early this year Shadow Invasion I think (I'd have to look it up), really cool stuff from an anime point of view….
It seems to me that to do an actual single, normal length movie, you'd either have to cut out so much that it has little relevancy to the original, or focus on a tiny episode that wouldn't really stand on it's own and make any sense to those not already innately familiar with Robotech.
Never heard of it.
Sounds about right.
