I already had a few reasons to turn on my HBO service here and there (Entourage, Conchords), but now I may end up with a need for Showtime.
Matthew Perry, along with Peter Nolan, is filming a pilot for Showtime called The End of Steve, which will be a dark comedy about an “egomaniacal local talk show host on a reluctant path to redemption.”
I’m not sure about you all, but I’ve been a big Perry fan ever since Friends, but it wasn’t until I saw him in The Whole Nine Yards (one of my all-time favs) that I realized he could do other stuff and be GOOD at it.
Then he was in The West Wing and was a perfect addition. Recently, he received nominations for an Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG award for his role in The Ron Clark Story.
So needless to say, I’m excited about any new project Perry does, and this sounds like an interesting series. He’ll be writing and producing the show, along with Tolan who is currently working on Rescue Me.
I have to say, if the writing is anything like Rescue Me, we’re in for a treat. Let’s hope it gets picked up.
Co-president of Sony Pictures TV, Zack Van Amburg, said the role will be a unique one for Perry.
“This role will show fans that he can be not only funny but also reach to some dark places,” he said. “It will be a departure from the way America thinks of Matthew. This is the beginning of a really exciting journey.”
What do you guys think? Are you big Perry fans?

Of course I'm a Perry fan. I'm not sure about this show – the cast of Friends has had some pretty mixed results with their post-Friends work.
Perry did some interesting work on a movie called Numb which just hit DVD not too long ago. I'm not going to say it was great, but it was interesting.
Dude – Dexter runs on Showtime as well – so that will be another need once you get hooked on it!
Never was a Perry fan, but then again, I wasn't into Friends at all. The plot for this show sounds ok, if it is running when Dexter is on (which is when Showtime will be turned back on) then I'll try to catch it.
I remember the trailers for that. It looked interesting but I never got around to it in the theater. Do you think it's worth renting?
Why do we have no review on it?
If you have Netflix or Blockbuster Total Access then it might be worth checking out. I wouldn't pay full rental price for it. I thought the girl in it was quite good.
I'm lazy.
Did I see it??
Um, yeah. It's the one where the girl curses for no apparent reason and Perry has a personality disorder.
Huh, I don't remember…
Must have been good
Yes
I love Matty!
I think there may be some bias when it comes to the “Friends” work after such a hit show. The audience has a hard time detaching the actors from their memorable characters. However, I’m really looking forward to seeing Matt on this new TV show.
I am a huge fan of Friends and, apart from that, I consider them all such great actors. Let’s give them the chance to show their talent in new roles!
BTW, I’m going to watch Numb this week and I’ve also heard he’s done a wonderful job even though the movie was not that awesome. I’ll have to watch it!
The movie numb was brilliant. It was, in my opinion his best work. The disorder is not seen often but people have said its not that big of a deal, well it is. Its like walking around in a zombie like state aware of things around you but not really. its worst than depression. I can totally understand how his character Hudson feels, about things not being real and wanting to be totally alone. He should do more movies like that, not jsut having a disorder, but something more serious than comedy cause he plays it out so wonderfully. He is one of my all time favourite actors because he is not afraid of taking a chance, like with Mr Sunshine. I cannot belive the network cancelled it, do they have absolutely no sense of humour? it was an original idea brought into light in such a hilarious way that it made you want more and more. Im not quiet at the mid life crisis stage but it affects everyone in different ways which is how Ben Donovan was represented. I really wish to see the rest of the season, please network, release the rest of the season. I wish Matthew Perry the best, he is such a down-to-earth guy who may not even realise it, such a beautiful person inside and I cannnot wait to see more of his movies that he will hopefully continue in the future. xox
