When I first reviewed In Plain Sight, the new series from the USA Network, I wasn’t too impressed. I didn’t get the humor right away, I thought some of the acting seemed unrealistic and the side story of Mary Shannon’s sister and mother annoying.
Well, it’s been four episodes now, and as I said I’d do in my review, I stuck it out and decided not to judge the show based solely on the pilot.
I like it. I don’t love it by any means, but I’m starting to really get into the stories involving these witnesses that need to be hidden away lest they end up dead.
Mary McCormack is impressive. She’s actually perfectly cast in this role. She’s an attractive woman for sure, but not one of those actresses with “model” good looks playing a part that is just unbelievable. She actually feels like a real U.S. Marshall. She has an almost “mannish” style about her, even looking incredibly awkward in sexy dress during the episode with the Bachelorette party.
And her partner Marshall is also a fun character, although we really don’t know much about him, except that he was looking for another job at the beginning of last night’s episode.
The only downside I see to the show is her ridiculous sister and mother, who mooch off her, wont get jobs and are just plain annoying. Despite glimpses that both seem to be making efforts to improve their lives, I still get a desire to fast-forward during their scenes.
The recent episode about the little boy who ends up with a foster family was actually quite touching.
So what about you guys? Are you still watching? Has it gotten better or worse for you?
Last night was the first episode I truly enjoyed, other than the annoying sister/mother B-story. Seriously, wouldn't a better B-story be following Paul Ben-Victor around for an evening? He goes to dinner and flirts with a waitress…gets shot down. He goes to a bar and tries to talk to some women…gets shot down. He calls a phone sex operator…gets shot down.
The A-story, though, that was pretty good. All they need to do now is bring on all the Kids in the Hall, one at a time, and this show could start cooking!
Yeah, no kidding, that B-story would have been much better
I did like Dave Foley last night and thought that was a nice twist in the story.
I'm still watching and while I like the Pilot, the second episode did not do it for me at all, probably my least favorite one so far. Last weeks episode was better with the kid – that started getting some traction for me. Last nights episode was by far the best of the season (minus the annoying family stuff). I agree with Porter – I think following Paul would make for a more interesting B-story line.
Over all – I'm right about where you are Mike – I'm liking it, but not loving it. I'm guessing if there were something else more compelling on competing against it, I would probably watch it but there isn't right now so that is probably a good thing for the show. I can't wait for Psych and Monk to return (along with Burn Notice, Dexter, LOST, and 24…)
I thought Foley did a good job and I liked the twist at the end with his character – good stuff. Last night was the best episode so far. I really like Marshall's character and I hope he sticks around – more than half the reason I watch the show is for his dry sense of humor.
The Ebony and Ivory Psych commercials are hysterical. It makes me want to check it out.
Those commercials have been very funny. Have you all not seen Psych yet?
Nope…
Man, I gotta watch Burn Notice and Dexter…now you're going to toss Psych at me??
No – I would say run with the two you got for now – there is plenty of time for Psych in the future.
For some reason I had thought you had been watching that show all along, but I guess if I would have been thinking about it I would have known that was not the case. It comes on Friday evening and you are already swamped with everything on that night.
I watched a little bit of one episode when they showed it on NBC, but I wasn't impressed and stopped watching after 10-15 minutes. I've heard some good things about Dule and the other guy… so maybe I will try it out when it comes back on.
I don't know how many times I can keep saying this, but I have to keep saying it because I believe it so strongly… Psych is one of the funniest, if not the funniest (on average) show on TV…period.
You guys are wasting your time watching those other silly shows when you could be watching quality entertainment that makes you laugh out loud. I'm just saying.
I will agree that it is laugh out loud funny – but Burn Notice and Dexter each have their stellar qualities too. If one of those were a comedy show – I would say quit watching them and watch Psych instead. But since they are different genres – I don't know if I could justify that.
I don't remember you talking about how much you love Psych before, Jason! But… I only really read what the Ape says… sorry.
The Ape says…”I don't know how many times I can keep saying this, but I have to keep saying it because I believe it so strongly… Psych is one of the funniest, if not the funniest (on average) show on TV…period.

Ouch. Burn.
Ouch. Burn.
Wait a minute…that sounds really familiar…
Just trying to help a brotha out…
Yeah, I've not heard Jason talk about Psych like this before, but I have a hard time believing it can be funnier than 30 Rock baby!
I suspected it before, but now I know. You guys don't actually read the stuff I write, do you?
What stuff do you write? Do you have a blog?
