In some pretty awesome news yesterday, I found out that I’ll be going to the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con on July 24th-27th as a member of the press and I couldn’t be happier.
For those that know my history (or have read our About page), I used to do sports writing back in the day and covered most of the professional teams here in Phoenix, Arizona. For a couple of years there, I attended every Suns and Cardinals game, not to mention practices and training camps.
So being able to switch from sports to the world of entertainment has been challenging, but also immensely fun. I absolutely LOVE what I do here on Pop Critics and can never get enough of it.
But Comic-Con is new to me. I think I know what I’m in store for, but having never been there, I’m going to be a fish out of water.
Hence I’m looking for your help.
I plan on being there for two days, Friday and Saturday, with Friday taken up mainly by exploring the place and seeing what I can see.
Saturday appears to be THE DAY for TV panels, including the cast of Fringe, Battlestar Galactica, Heroes, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Pushing Daisies, Chuck, The Office writers (with Rainn Wilson) and potentially Dollhouse.
I’m seriously bummed that the Always Sunny in Philadelphia team will be there on Sunday, but my time that I can be there is short, so those two days will have to work.
What I’m looking for is stories and advice from any of you who have attended the San Diego Comic-Con before, or any other one for that matter. What should I look for? What are the top things to see besides the obvious TV panels, new comic book releases, movie screenings, etc?
I’m totally excited for the opportunity to do this. Not knowing yet how things work as far as writers go, I hope to blog as much as I possibly can about the cool stuff I see and hear about. I think this is a big deal for us to cover this huge event and I’m stoked that we can do this for you guys.
I have to thank John at The Movie Blog for pointing me in the right direction to help make this happen. Thank you John!
So those of you out there who have attended! Tell me your stories and the fun stuff I need to do! Also, what do you want me to check out while I’m there? And if any of you are around, we’ll have to meet up and check the place out together!

Going as a member of the press… man, you're official now!
I've never been before Mike, but a huge congrats to you and PopCritics for being able to land this. I'm guessing you will have a good time. I look forward to the posts from your time there. Too bad both you and Jason could go together.
You should live-blog the panels, and post pictures, lots of pictures (and video too). That is, go online and find out what's known about the various shows so that you'll be able to recognize what's news once you're at comic-con. Then sit there and relay everything that's said and shown in real time. If you can manage that (i.e. put us there), I along with a ton of other people will be glued to pop critics, refresh, refresh, refresh.
He'll be there in spirit.
SCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE!!!!
….oh yeah btw, you suck, I'm jealous, I hate your stinking slimy guts, and have a great time!!
But physically I'll be curled up in a little ball crying like a baby and screaming “Why not ME, God!? Why not ME?”
That's okay, I guess. I get SXSW and the Austin Film Fest next year. I know it's not the same exactly, but still cool.
Kudos to Mike for pulling it off so late in the game and to John over at The Movie Blog for helping out. Our goal next year: members of the Masters of the Web panel. Hey, it could happen!
Members of the Masters of the Web Panel? Is that like He-Man and the Masters of the Universe?
SXSW - nice!
The last time I was in Austin was the summer/fall of 1991 when I was TDY at Fort Hood. A group of us would jaunt on over to Austin and check out the band scene. Loved it.
Yes - and they are all going to be wearing Christian Bale tights, capes, and masks…
Because you live in friggin' Austin!
There is actually some cool software out there that will allow me to update stuff live, so you see stuff refresh without even reloading…
Now, if they have wireless there so that live-blogging is a realistic plan, I'll soooo do that
Um…I was asking God….
Yeah, Jina and I were talking and you should DEFINITELY get into SXSW next year and that film festival. Would be awesome!
Yes. Yes it is.
Or you guys could just move down here and we could all go. Either way.
And I answered
Someday
LOL
I'll line up a babysitter for the both of us right now!
How many times do I have to tell you I'm cool to stay by myself! I don't need a babysitter!
LOL! I was drinking something when I read that and my drink was so close to being all over the monitor.
