Pop Critics to give Disqus a shot

As I’ve mentioned many, many times, the fun we have here is interacting with all you guys. If we didn’t get feedback, discussions or opinions on stuff we post about, we’d likely give up, because Jason and I can really only take so much of talking to each other.

That being the case, we’ve been impressed with the guys over at Disqus and what they do for blogging communities.

Basically what Disqus does is give us a cool new comment system directly on our site, that has a ton of features you guys will love.

  • Avatars like we have now
  • Threaded discussions - meaning you can reply directly to a specific comment, so you don’t always have to specify who you are talking to
  • A community page for Pop Critics where you can read all our discussions in one nice place and even start new threads that aren’t linked to a blog. Almost like a forum!
  • Ability to reply to comments via EMAIL!
  • Rate comments
  • Track threads with RSS
  • Track all comments on a page on OUR blog, which I’ve been wanting for a long time.
  • Edit your comments
  • Track specific user’s comments, whether on our blog or another one using Disqus.
  • Gives us more control over all of that stuff

You can tour their features over on their site if you want to see more. This is our community page over there already, even if nothing has really happened yet.

The bottom line is this: You will be able to comment here like you always have, even if you don’t want to register with Disqus. You’ll still be counted towards the Top Critics every month (since I know you ALL are so INTO that) and be a part of the site like always.

However, if you want to register, it’s real easy and gives you access to all these features.  We will probably implement this on Monday next week, so we wanted to give you all a heads up in case you wanted to be ready for it.

Registering is simple:

  1. Go to Disqus and signup (takes like 5 seconds)
  2. Use the email address you use here, which links to your Gravatar!
  3. Wait for Monday OR visit our community page and find the Welcome post I made.

I know not everyone likes to register, but I think it will be a fun way for us to form an even better community here, and heck, if you don’t want to, don’t do it! You will still be able to comment like always and be a part of Pop Critics!

Anyways, we’re going to test this out for a week and see how it goes. If the feedback is good, we’ll stick with it. If you all hate it, we’ll go back to the old way.

That being the case, we want to make sure you guys give us feedback on your experience with it next week, so feel free to barage us with emails: webmaster@popcritics.com

Thanks, and have a great weekend!

  1. Sounds great! Sign me up!

(I just felt I should add a positive comment about it.)

Seriously, though, I’ve been using it on some other sites and I’m loving it. Really cool. Check it out.

  2. So glad Jason is on board :)

  3. They support OpenID as well, so at least I don’t have to memorize another password. :)

The site is running pretty slowly, though.

  7. It’s a hiccup. Their site has been pretty fast for the most part. I’m sure it’ll get better soon.

  8. Yeah, looks like they had some sort of database problem this morning. They’re probably still recovering.

  9. Yeah, from what I’ve seen and done with it recently, it’s seemed pretty fast…so we’ll see how it goes. Probably just the blip today.

  11. [...] this is the official post with the new commenting system from Disqus enabled. We told you guys that we were going to test Disqus out this coming week, and it’s time to get the trial run [...]

  12. It offers many benefits that encourage me to join. But I got problem during the signing up problem. Could it be from my network quality?…Anyway, I’ll check again later.
