I actually woke up a little after 3 and decided to watch the show. Was looking forward to reading your review at 4 but nothing was up yet. But I realize it is 4am in the morning after all and you're probably sleeping… lol

I personally think they should have waited until they aired episode 10 (one of my favorites) before deciding to bury it.

    Great review.

PS. You hear about that other show “Jeremiah” that's going to be premiering this week on Thursday at 7? I thought it was a new show but looked it up. Aired 2002-2004. Looks interesting. But it will probably suffer the same fate as Charlie Jade.

Sorry Sean, I thought I had it scheduled for 4am so it would appear right after the episode aired, but maybe I did it wrong :)

You know, I've never actually seen Jeremiah, which is a little embarrassing for my geek cred as it's a JMS project. But no. I hadn't heard SciFi was airing it. I haven't had the SciFi channel on once, other than for 2am Charlie Jade since BSG ended. Now, over on USA I've seen plenty of ads for Scare Tactics, but not one for Jeremiah.

    Frakers.

As ever, great recap! :) The fight scene was difficult to watch…sort of gasping for breath just watching; as well as Reena's confinement and torture. . ack but that music–any other day shopping at the mall, the familiar, bland sameness blaring against the backdrop of utter desolation and confusion leaves more than the plot a twistin' & turnin'.
& poor Charlie, what is it about the water>??? More than a few times he seems so close…

Yeah, it's rough for Reena. I feel bad for her. She shows up in this blue, noisy, violent place and gets beat up, chased, kidnapped, and tortured. Plus, all the food tastes bad.

Charlie gets here and gets to have drinks with Paula.

She must have some awfully bad karma. I mean, besides for blowing up all those Vex-Cor people. And really, they *were* just Vex-Cor employees. Odds are they were all bad dudes anyway. :)

Just don't let it happen again. Got it?

SUPER re-cap!!!!! Man is it tough to be a chick with a name starting with the letter R… Poor girl… Finally we get our hero to make a choice and do somethng we have been waitng for. I keep over analyzing everything in ever scene though… what does that mean, what does this mean…way too many clues, I keep trying to mentally track it all…
    Great write-up Ricahrd =)

Gotta tell you…when you're watching the second time through it's so much more fun. Seriously. You just see the little throwaways and know which ones really matter and which ones aren't as important. Plus, in this one case, knowing these characters better and knowing where they're going to be doesn't detract from the show, it actually enhances it for me.

Not that I would spoil for ANYONE!!!

Good advice…I'm going to have to start asking you then… does this really matter or can I let go of it mentally….? =)

For what it's worth, this show needed much tighter editing… both on paper and behind the camera. It took too many episodes to finally reach the point where we see 01 travel between universes. In this episode for example, is it really necessary to spend 10 (or more) minutes on Reena in that room to convey the message that she's being held captive and tortured? Ditto on the scenes with Jasmine in Charlie’s former apartment. Throughout this series, the camera lingers far too long on too many scenes and useful information is doled out in miniscule bits and pieces. Because of poor pacing and a desire to place a cool visual presentation over plot development and forward momentum, what could've have been a very interesting show turns into a slow, plodding, convoluted mess. Perhaps more coherent if blocks of episodes aired back-to-back, but in weekly doses… well, I've already forgotten what took place 4 episodes back.

I certainly appreciate that criticism, but I personally like the pace of the show. This isn't a movie, where everything needs to be resolved in two hours. Slowing down gives us a chance to know Reena and Jasmine, for example. But I'm not plot-driven like many people; I'm more interested in character.

  23. Charlie Jade recap: “Diamonds” | Pop Critics - Movies|TV|Books|Music|Reviews

[...] Karl’s slow on the uptake. He first assumes Vex-Cor wants to replace real diamonds with counterfeits. Then Charlie shows Karl the scar on his wrist. The chips Vex-Cor uses to classify and track everyone in Alpha are diamond chips. If Vex-Cor is growing synthetics here in Beta, it must mean they intend to institute large-scale tracking. Tracking with the same type of chip Charlie cut from Andrea Bridger’s wrist back in “And Not a Drop to Drink”. [...]
