Believe it or not: The Greatest American Hero headed to comic books

Sadly I wont be at Comic-Con until Friday, because it would be a blast to check out what’s coming for The Greatest American Hero .

The entire cast of the original series, which ran from 1981-83, will be assembling this Thursday at Comic-Con to announce that the cult superhero show is going to be reborn as a comic book.

There are supposedly two other special announcements as well, although there is no hint as to what they might be. One can only guess that with the original cast together again, and a new comic book coming out, that there is a lot more planned to bring this franchise back from the dead.

The panel of original stars include William Katt, Connie Sellecca, Robert Culp, Dennis “Danger” Madalone (Stuntman).

According to Newsarama, the comic book will be an initial six-issue series, which will be collected into a graphic novel later on, with hopes of more to come. Newsarama did an interview with Katt, the star of the original series and creator of Catastrophic Comics, the publisher of The Greatest American Hero:

“The initial three books will be a re-telling of the origin story from the two-hour pilot, although we’ve taken some liberties,” Katt said. “We’ve truncated some of the storyline with the kids. And we changed a little bit of the bad guys, giving them more of a role in it. We wanted a recurring villain in it — kind of like a Lex Luthor.

“After the initial three issues, we’re going to explore some new stories, probably picking up where the seasons left off. We’d like to play with it a little bit and branch it off a little bit. There will be other villains in subsequent stories. And we might have some guest writers in the future,” Katt said. “And the first six issues will be collected into a graphic novel, with the hopes of maybe doing another volume in the future.”

We have a short teaser below for your enjoyment. What do you guys think? Are you excited about the idea of seeing The Greatest American Hero back in action? Did you love the series as a kid?

I was around eight at the time, so I don’t remember much other than a guy flying around out of control and the theme song.

Check out the cover of the comic book after the teaser.

  1. I actually bought the first issue of the first comic from Catastrophic Comics last month. It was interesting. I was a fan of TGAH and will definitely pick up at least the first issue if not the full run.

William Katt's a bit of a nerd, so I think the books will actually be fun.

  2. I loved this show as a kid… but the more I think about it, all I can really remember is the intro song (which was great) and the main guy's poofy permed hair (which was scary).

Not sure if I care about a redo.

  3. At the time, was the Greatest show on TV… bill (the FBI guy was just a total riot…. I could have done without ralphs stoopid class he taught, but I enjoyed him struggling with his powers and the exchange with the FBI guy…

  4. I will choose not to believe it…

  5. But ya have ta….!

  6. I loved that show. It made me laugh so much every time he would crash. And Connie was so great in that show , but she was great in everything I saw her in. She is an Italian HERO

  7. The early 80s was a great time for sci-fi shows. TGAH, Hulk, Martian Chronicles, The Phoenix (remember that one?), the original Battlestar Galactica, etc…

Sadly, I think William Katt started doing soft porn in the 90s though. But, fast-forward to the new century and all of that nonsense is behind us and once again, the golden age dawns on sci-fi TV. yea!
