As I’ve said many times, my experience with comics is pretty new. I skipped them during my childhood and decided to get hooked in my thirties. Funny how life works sometimes.
So my background with Captain America boils down to two comic books: The Civil War graphic novel and the shocking Captain America issue #25.
But despite that limited exposure, I really grew to love the character. I wanted to read more about Steve Rogers and his adventures as Captain America.
Enter Captain America: White written by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. This marks the fourth collaboration in their “color” series of comic books, which include Daredevil: Yellow, Hulk: Grey and Spiderman: Blue.
These colors always have a double-meaning and the three previous stories all involved the central super hero dealing with the loss of another character.
White is no different. It is essentially a Captain America and Bucky story, with an all-new origin plot for Bucky that takes place during World War II.
According to Comic Book Resource, Bucky was dead for a long time, only to resurface as still alive. White takes place in the early years when Steve Rogers still thinks he’s dead.
After reading the first issue, I really, really love it. The style of the art is wonderfully old school looking, with a square-jawed Captain America and muted colors. The story was compelling and I really enjoy Loeb and Sale’s usage of “narration boxes” to reveal the hero’s inner thoughts.
It’s definitely worth a look and I’ve added it to my new “box” over at Atomic Comics.
Here are three pages from the comic. The one of the cover is the issue I got, even though there is another one. I really liked this variant the best.

I love the graphics on these!
