Could Torchwood Star Be Captain America?

Comingsoon.net is reporting that John Barrowman, the star of Torchwood, was just asked if there is any possibility that he would be playing Captain America in the upcoming film for Marvel. Barrowman is in San Diego and is currently appearing on a panel at Comic-Con.

Apparently, Barrowman gave all the correct stock answers that we’ve all grown to expect: he’d love to play the character, Captain America is his favorite comic book hero, etc. The thing is, though, the question was not surprising to him. In fact, by the time they finished asking him questions he had admitted that there had been discussions with his agents on the subject.

As Comingsoon says, he doesn’t really have the star-power that studios usually like to have, but Barrowman definitely looks the part and could actually be a pretty fair sized star by the time the Captain America movie comes out.

So, what do you think? Could John Barrowman be Captain America?

The First Avenger: Captain America is scheduled to hit theaters on May 6, 2011.

  1. I dunno anything about the guy…. maybe a no-name in this case is needed… I cant think of ANYONE (well) known to fit the bill…

  2. No, he couldn't, not as long as the U.S. mainstream remains in “don't ask, don't tell” mode. Barrowman tells. Too bad, I think he'd do a great job in the role.

  3. Hey if Tom Cruise can get work than why can't Barrowman whoever he is?

  4. He's got star power oozing out his pores. I personally think Captain Jack is a bit old for Cap, but it really all depends on whether they intend to tell his origin story or not.

But y'all know I'm all about Jason Street!!!

Six for Cap! Six for Cap! Six for Cap!

  5. Nobody told me until you just did. I had no idea.

  6. Me either, I had to google it and happened upon his website where he describes his preferences…

  7. I went to his website. The picture on the front page with the yellow teeth…no thanks. Not MY Captain America.

  8. Now that I know he's gay…he looks really…well, you know.

  9. Yeah Im just not sure that on his site he brags that American boys kiss much better than UK boys, if thats something Marvel minds him promoting as open as he does.. his preferences are his choice I guess…I dunno… I think this role will be difficult to fill…

  10. See I thought totally gay, but whatever. I just watched the first episode of Mad Men last night and the main dude has the jawline of Captain America, and I always thought as Steve Richards as being an older guy. Just a thought.

  11. I think this guy could be good–gay or not. Who cares? He's not going to play Cap gay. They'd probably bleach his hair blonde, too.

But, I would hop that with all of the success and aclaim coming out of this summer's comic book movie crop that a guy like Matt Damon is considering the role. He'd be perfect.

Lastly, Dadofiandi, I'm going to geek out on you a little bit here: It's Steve Rogers…not Richards. :) (But, I agree with you. For some reason I think of Cap as being older, too. He won't be though because of the origin–new recruit in WWII that takes the super soldier formula and –at most–a couple of years later is frozen in ice. Technically, he should be around 20-24).

I think an older actor could work because of the commanding presence he's supposed to have. I think younger people/actors have a hard time pulling that off. Also, if they eventually do a Cap movie that's not an origin film, they ffwd in time a bit. I get the impression that even in the timelessness of the comic book universe, Cap has been around for a long time. You can see it in the way the newer heroes are in awe and get nervous around him.

  12. …”Steve Richards “… Steve Rogers…. =)

  13. oops mixed mr fantastic with captain america, uhhh yeah he was in marvel x
    universe, thats the ticket

  14. Your right to a degree, gay or not who cares, but…. hollywood, Marvel /DC are lookign for guys who represent their hero/heroine outside fo their movie as well. An example is Christian Bale has a pretty rough accent, however when he does interviews about Batman he ALWAYS does them in a clear cut American Bruce Wayne voice. He as actually asked about this and why he does it. He said Bruce Wayne/Batman is an American Hero, and American Icon, and I want to represent that character I portray when asked about it so people can adopt me as that person.
So if you have Mr. Happy pants bragging about his latest outing with whomever American boy or UK boy, its not going to relate to something that Steve Rogers would do…thats why it might matter..

I know it WILL matter, I just think it shouldn't. It's a shame, IMO.

  16. LOL

  17. Oh, and something that maybe got lost in my tome of a post: Matt Damon IS Captain America. If I were running the place, I'd be throwing a ton of money at him to get him to do it.

  18. Damon is Jason Bourne… I think he's too short, doesnt fit the build enough of a Cap America…. I dunno… I'd have to be convinced, maybe see it to be sold, I cant picture any well known right now in the part… but thats just me =)

  19. Fair 'nuff. (but I'm right)

    ;)

  20. Capt Jack As Captain America would at a new twist on the old story ,

Last time I checked Capt America Was not immortal . He also Aged like the rest of us and was not impervious to any and all types of weapons .

He also could not jump through time like Jack can.
Jack Can Run faster than most turbo charged cars .

    Capt America Can't.

Jack would need to become a body builder if you want him to become Capt America in the nude scen where he is exposed to cosmic radiation and changes from 5'6' to 6' 4″ .And steps out of the chamber of rebirth .

If you remember at that exact moment he is shot ten times by a german crackpot who also kills every scientist working on project AVENGER and destroys all records and computers that might let America create a race of super men. He is also killed.

  21. see i see matt damon as Hawkeye, I don't know why.

  22. I'd cast Ryan Reynolds as Clint Barton (or, in the DC universe, Wally West). But, nobody checks with me about these things.

  23. Ryan as the Flash would be PERFECT,a nd he was in for sure when it was David Goyer directing, he got moved out and so did Reynolds… =(
