Final Box Office Numbers Increase The Dark Knight Record Breaking Weekend Gross

As we all know, the money men in Hollywood aren’t perfect. Sometimes they pay for movies that should never be made. Sometimes they pay too much for movies that should be made cheaply. Sometimes they estimate a record breaking weekend gross for The Dark Knight only to have to eat their words on Monday when the final numbers come out and the record is even higher than they thought.

That’s right. We, along with everyone else in the world, reported that The Dark Knight broke the weekend box office gross record with an estimated weekend gross of $155.3M this past weekend. But stop inscribing those trophy plates because the final numbers have come out and it looks like we’ll be adding about $3M to that total.

The problem with the guestimating was with Sunday. Most movies are pretty easy to figure out since they follow a pretty straightforward (though complicated) pattern of drop-offs depending on how much they do on Friday and Saturday. Since they release the estimates on Sunday before the actual numbers come in, they aren’t always perfect. For instance, when people really talk up a movie like they did with The Dark Knight they really have no idea how many people will go see the film on Sunday for sure. So they don’t really know how well the film will do.

In the case of The Dark Knight, the studio underestimated Sunday sales. They had expected and estimated that the film would do about $39.4M on Sunday but it actually had sales of $43.6M which will end up giving The Dark Knight the record for one day Sunday sales (beating Spider-Man 3 which had the record at $39.9M).

So, what is the final tally. Well, the final record breaking number for the weekend gross of The Dark Knight is $158.4M.

Gee, is there any chance they’ll be doing another one?

Unless you work in a cinema, like I do, in which case you can get to see it tomorrow.
