Guy Ritchie Has Action Plans For Sherlock Holmes - Reveals Villain Of Film

Guy Ritchie did some talking at Comic-Con about his plans for Sherlock Holmes. Ritchie is known for his gritty crime dramas so it wasn’t a big surprise when he announced a while back that he wanted to make Sherlock a little more action oriented than past incarnations. He backed up that idea when he cast brand new action star Robert Downey, Jr. as his Holmes. Now we know even more.

Sherlock Holmes was always a proficient fighter in the stories by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, yet he seldom used his fighting skills instead relying on good old logic simple and deduction to solve most of his crimes. At Comic-Con, however, Ritchie and producer Joel Silver both said that the new version of Holmes would be a “big, wild action movie.”

The pair described Holmes even further and said that he was like “James Bond in 1891.” Ritchie’s movie will attempt to show us the intellectual side of Sherlock Holmes while punctuating the story with action sequences at regular points.

Furthermore, the two confirmed that Holmes’ arch-nemesis, Professor Moriarty, will appear in the film. The film, however, will not be based on any one story or novel, but on an “amalgamation” of Doyle’s vast library. “It’s true to the period,” Ritchie said. “And authentic from where it derives its influence.”

Holmes’ sidekick, Dr. Watson, and Professor Moriarty have not yet been cast.

Filming is expected to begin in October.

  1. This movie is going to be f'ing awesome.

But, really, who didn't think Moriarty was going to be in it?

  2. Strap on some rocket boots and repulsor rays to ole Holmes and it'll be chaulk full of action!!!! ;)
Just teasin, should be cool to see Holmes upgraded after all this time…

  3. My god… This movie will suck so hard.

  4. This could be good but could be Wild Wild West bad, the movie bad, not the TV show which kicked ass.

  5. I can't see Holmes being the James Bond of 1891. I always thought of him as more of an intellectual than a fist fighter.

  6. @ Ana. I completely agree. A wild action flick is definitely not what i expect from Sherlock Holmes. I was happy with the casting though. Robert Downey Jr. has put out some good movies (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man, Tropic Thunder).

  7. I'm totally with you….I'm digging this already…

And Moriarty…yes, I agree…he has to be in it. As far as casting for it…how about the dude who played him in STTNG?? :)

  8. Yeah, but he did have fighting skills…but none of the stories really went into that if I recall.

I'd love to see The Valley of Fear made into a movie though, that story always blew my mind.

  9. With Downey Jr in it, its going to be really heard for this to suck at any level…

  10. Yeah but if it was him who played Moriarity, if he walked out of the room he would disappear…

  11. You know that was like 20 years ago, right?

  12. I love it when people completely agree with me. :)

  13. How much did you pay this “Tim J” to agree with you?

  14. Nada. It's not as rare as you think. :)

  15. This just sound so interesting on so many levels. I will be looking forward to see what they come up with and how it all falls together.

  16. Seriously? That's freaky

  17. Mrs. Cap'n told me once she thought all I do is disagree with her, I told her I disagreed with that…

  18. Your getting old!! You're catchin up the the Capn!

  19. …men…

  21. I busted out laughing when I read that. Nice. :)

  22. Its rare but sometimes I can pull out a Jason quality type comment =)

  23. All I ever get is a giggle…some times a snicker…never a bust out.

  24. @Jason (because nesting tree wont let me reply)… yeah but what 1 bust out = what, 5 giggles?!?! and you've had more than 5 giggles, so right there thats more quality comedy than the rest…
